Media, Communications and Visibility Consultant, Madrid Spain

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to end global hunger. In emergencies, we get food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After the cause of an emergency has passed, we use food to help communities rebuild their shattered lives.
We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the Media, Communications and Visibility Consultant position, which will be based in our Office in Madrid, Spain for a contract period of 6 months, with possibility of extension up to 11 months. Applicants should be skilled communicators, able to analyze and articulate the issues which impact hunger and food assistance requirements in order to generate greater understanding and support for hunger solutions.
The Consultant will report directly to the Head of Office in Madrid, and be responsible for the following key duties:
  • Design and implement communications and visibility strategies and activities which ensure a greater understanding of WFP’s work in Spain;
  • Prepare and edit news releases;
  • Ensure that communications activities promote an accurate image of the organization and its programmes amongst media and other targeted audiences such as donor partners and civil society;
  • Actively engage media as well as respond to media inquiries; In the absence of the Head of the Madrid Office, act as WFP Spokesperson in Spain;
  • Generate social media content for use across a range of integrated online platforms including WFP website, Twitter feeds and Facebook pages;
  • Assess the general reaction of the public to WFP’s work on the basis of information gathered from media, organized groups and correspondence;
  • Stay current on WFP operations, public policy trends and issues;
  • Prepare multi-media, visibility and advocacy products and campaigns for external distribution to the public, the media, educational institutions, non-governmental agencies and donors;
  • Work on a plan to strengthen WFP’s brand in Spain through publicly recognized activities such as cooperation and development of public events, awards programmes and conferences;
  • Perform other related duties.Qualifications & Experience Required
Education:
· University degree in Journalism (preferably Foreign Correspondence and International Media), International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing or other related fields.
Experience:
  • At least three years of experience as a Journalist, Communications Officer or Spokesperson.
Technical Skills & Competencies:
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills;
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills;
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team with other Media and Communications Officers;
  • Ability to work harmoniously with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
Language:
  • Working knowledge (proficiency/level C) of English and Spanish.
