Position Summary

At BG Group we recognise our responsibility to reduce our emissions, as well as the risks and opportunities that climate change can present. With an extensive understanding of engineering principles, you will play a pivotal part in driving critical energy efficiency improvements across the business to save money, protect the environment and enhance our reputation. You will be a leading champion in helping BG Group deliver its stated energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction target and support the development of new programmes to enhance existing activities and anticipate emerging risk. 

Working with businesses across the group you will support assets across the oil and gas value chain to find practical solutions to environmental issues and ensure they not only comply with internal standards but go beyond them wherever possible. This includes the identification and implementation of best available technique for energy efficiency and general environmental management within new developments to ensure a process of continuous improvement in design. You will also work with existing operations globally to support asset based teams identify practical means of managing their environmental emissions. With an eye to the future, you will also play a critical part in shaping our rapidly emerging Research and Development programme to identify next generation management techniques and technology.

You will therefore have the ability to identify potential environmental engineering risks to the business across all time horizons and develop pragmatic strategies and the business case to achieve successful outcomes and mitigate the risks. Given the need for integrated solutions with our businesses and their priorities, you will have exposure to all levels of management and disciplines within the group to promote best practice and inspire a shared commitment across the business. 

Key Accountabilities

Develop and promote environmental engineering best practice in conjunction with the Environmental Engineering Manager and Group Head of Environmental Performance.

Manage the day to day coordination and tracking of energy efficiency and carbon abatement initiatives across the Group through all life stages of our asset portfolio including conception, design, construction, operation and end of life.

Provide support for the Group GHG reduction target and implementing Group Environmental Strategy in this area, driving internal emissions management and reductions as well as monitoring and reporting on emissions. This includes activities that result in methane reduction as well as CO2 emission reduction. 

Make authoritative recommendations for changing and developing Environmental Standards, Guidance and tools which support the Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas Management Programme. Support other members of the Environment and Climate Change team.

Develop, maintain and promote tools to support BG Group Environmental Business Principles

Provide expert Environmental advice and consultancy for Assets with respect to Environmental Engineering requirements and compliance with environmental regulations and laws (local and international)

Lead Best Available Technique workshops with asset and project based staff

Where appropriate, conduct management audits and reviews of Standards implementation

Provide support to project Peer Assists, Functional and Readiness Reviews

Coaching of graduates and other employees across the Group on energy efficiency and other related emission management.

Support the energy efficiency Technology Programme (established with Universities in Brazil), set strategy and priorities for programme and provide oversight of relevant specific environmental technology projects.

In addition to any specific accountabilities for HSSE, all managers are accountable for HSSE within their area of the Business and are responsible for ensuring that their team adopt exemplary HSSE behaviours.

Unique Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Attribute

Experienced practitioner in various engineering and environmental management assessment techniques (Energy audit, ENVID, EIA, BAT, energy/environmental management systems). Operational experience in the identification and selection of typical power, compression, heating and environmentally critical equipment. 

Extensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical and rotating equipment principles with experience working in engineering, environmental, or operations teams
Good working knowledge of the oil and gas sector. 

Relevant degree level education (chemical, mechanical or environmental engineering) required. Supplementary degrees considered an advantage (e.g. Masters with additional commercial or policy focus). Potential qualification in environmental management.
Holds appropriate professional membership
Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders, at all levels in an asset and at a corporate level
Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, skilled at integrating conflicting technical and political issues and competing budgetary pressures to recommend practical solutions and guidance

Good commercial understanding to develop the business case for improvements and gain adoption within asset budget and planning systems. Able to promote environmental good practices and balance this with competing goals.

Proven track record in carrying out and delivering environmental management duties such as environmental engineering option identification and impact assessment.
