Food Security & Agricultural Officer

Combine your knowledge of food preservation techniques with the local customs of Tanna Island in Vanuatu and help people be more resilient to the impact of natural disasters, such as eruptions from the island’s volcano.
This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.
The Tafea Provincial Agriculture Office sits within the Vanuatu Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and is responsible for implementing agricultural programs in the field. The department aims to increase food security and farming systems for citizens of Vanuatu.
The Tafea Province, and Vanuatu as a whole, is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. In times of natural disasters food security is at high risk and there is great need for people in rural communities to learn how to preserve the locally grown food so that it can be stored for longer periods of time.
An AVID volunteer has been requested to help communities learn about food preservation techniques. The volunteer will learn about local crops and food preservation methods already in use and work with the agricultural officers to raise community awareness by helping to prepare brochures and fact sheets for communities. This assignment is in a remote community and the volunteer will need to be adaptable and prepared to work with limited resources.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Experience in working with agricultural staff to implement food preservation techniques in low-resource environments
  • Experience in presenting agricultural concepts to non-scientific groups
  • Qualifications in food technology or agriculture or rural development
  • Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
How to apply:
To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.
