Would you like to play a part in helping people in England to live better for longer?
That’s the main purpose of the Department of Health, which leads, shapes and funds health and care in England, ensuring that people have access to the care, support and treatment that can make a huge difference to their lives. We’re looking for people to work on a diverse range of programmes, initiatives and policies that help promote the highest standards of health care and support the best interests of patients, the public and taxpayers.
As you would expect the range of work we are involved in is extensive. So you might find yourself working on improving or response to dementia; or helping reduce smoking rates in children; or working to ensure that the NHS is sustainable for another 60 years. There is considerable opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge and really test yourself within an organisation that is committed to supporting learning and development, where you’ll be encouraged and supported to reach your full potential.
These roles will see you contribute to policy and prepare reports for key decision makers in government, within the NHS and the Department of Health. You’ll analyse data and existing policy to arrive at clear recommendations to support sustainable improvement in health policy and provision of care. You should be confident in your ability to sift information from a range of sources and arrive at sound conclusions supported by clear rationales - even if working with incomplete or ambiguous information. Being able to communicate well in person and in writing will be key and you can expect to be working with a wide range of professional bodies such as NHS England or Public Health England as well as key players in the health industries and a diverse group of stakeholders.
These roles will suit individuals who can offer a blend of intellectual rigour, an enquiring mind and excellent attention to detail. You should enjoy working in a team environment, but equally be confident working independently, ensuring that you meet agreed deadlines and deliver high quality work at all times. It’s likely that you’ll be degree qualified though this isn’t essential if you can demonstrate practical experience of the key requirements of this role.
