Head of global macroeconomics

Role Synopsis:
The Economics Team provides insightful analysis of global energy markets to inform the firm’s decision-making. The purpose of this role is to contribute to the team’s overall delivery by providing analysis of the global economy - the key determinant of energy consumption.

  1. identifying and communicating global economic developments which will have an impact on the BP’s business and the business environment in which BP operates
  2. dentifying and communicating the impact of global economic developments on energy demand, supply and trade.
This includes the analysis of resource-rich economies, as well as the prospects for the major economies around the world, and the outlook for exchange rates and inflation. It requires the ability of linking macroeconomic, global developments to energy markets. In addition, the role will include being part of the team which produces the annual BP Energy Outlook and BP Statistical Review of World Energy, including leading parts of the data organisation and analysis, as well as contributing to the central presentation. The role also includes the establishment of macroeconomic Group-wide Planning Assumptions, and frequent ad hoc production of economic analysis.
Key accountabilities;
  • Short-term economic outlooks (STOFs). Responsible for regular written reports for the Executive Team and the rest of the company, including integrating contributions for other team members
  • Responsible for visual briefing material for regular ETM and Board meetings. Establish and maintain a set of assumptions for economic growth, inflation and exchange rates, which support the analysis of the rest of the Economics team
  • Manage the STOFs process within the team. BP Energy Outlook 2030 - lead research streams and fundamental energy economic analysis, which shapes the Energy Outlook narrative.  
  • Lead Energy Outlook projections on nuclear energy and hydroelectricity. Responsible for looking after long-term historical energy data and IEA sectorial breakdown data.
  • BP Statistical Review of World Energy. Lead “The Economy” section of the Statistical Review; Responsible for nuclear energy and hydroelectricity statistical tables, analysis and presentation.
  • Lead Group planning assumptions: Responsible for establishing and maintaining Group-wide planning assumptions (exchange rates, GDP growth and inflation rate) for over 90 countries, for quarterly GFOs, Annual Plans, and investment appraisal using GIAAP.
  • Maintain economic risk analysis. Coordinate monthly Global Economic Risk report to the GFRC, including written analysis of key global macroeconomic risks. Coordinate team’s input to Group’s Country Economic Risk Reviews, including delivering the macroeconomic analysis which under-pins the risk assessment studies for existing countries of operation and new country access.
Essential Education
  • Graduate degree in economics is a minimum requirement, advanced degree an advantage.
Essential experience and job requirement;
  • Experience in macroeconomic analysis and its interface with energy markets
  • Experience in applying economic analysis and communicating the results clearly to a non-specialist and/or commercial audience.
Travel required Yes - up to 25%

The Economics Team (ECM) is part of the Chief of Staff's Office. The purpose of the Economics Function is to advise the Group on the key energy market and macro-economic issues. BP's Statistical Review of World Energy is a key product provided by the Economics team.
The purpose of the Economics Function is to advise the Group on the key energy market and macro-economic issues. It delivers that analysis to the Group Executive, the Group Leadership, and other BP audiences. It also serves as a centre of expertise on the application of economic principles and assumptions to business issues throughout the Group. BP's Statistical Review of World Energy is one of a number of high quality materials on energy markets (and other economic issues) that is provided by the team for both internal and external audiences. BP has published the Statistical Review of World Energy annually, as a public service, since 1951.
The team comprises three main functions: macroeconomics, energy markets and oil refining. Team members are located in the UK, the US, Asia, and Russia.
