Project Description:
The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) is a worldwide collaborative clinical trials network that brings together investigators, ethicists, community and other partners to develop and test the safety and efficacy of interventions designed to prevent the acquisition and transmission of HIV. HPTN studies evaluate new HIV prevention interventions and strategies in populations and geographical regions that bear a disproportionate burden of infection.
The HPTN research agenda is focused primarily on the use of integrated strategies: use of antiretroviral drugs (antiretroviral therapy and pre-exposure prophylaxis); interventions for substance abuse, particularly injection drug use; behavioral risk reduction interventions and structural interventions. The HPTN is committed to the highest ethical standards for its clinical trials and recognizes the importance of community engagement in all phases of the research process.
Additional Responsibilities:
The Communications Specialist II, HPTN will require a marketing mindset and will include creating a communications strategy for the NIH-funded clinical research network, HPTN. The key focus will include proactively profiling HPTN’s accomplishments with the wider research community as well as communities where we do our research. This person will lead efforts in the creation and delivery of news and other information to both internal and external audiences (partners, funders etc). This may include press releases, memorandums as well as marketing materials.
The Communications Specialist II, HPTN will develop a comprehensive communications and branding strategy for the HPTN in conjunction with HPTN leadership (including members of the network leadership at FHI 360) and spear-head publicity and public relations with prevention science experts. He/she will also:
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of news and other information to audiences both internal and external to the HPTN.
  • Coordinate closely with NIAID Office of Communications and Government Relations regarding development of press releases or other documents for the media related to network studies.
  • Work in close coordination with FHI Communications Division especially for editing and production support. Develop separate materials outlining HPTN’s response to news regarding US domestic and international epidemic.
  • Communicate with Network members on a regular basis about highlights in HPTN and other Prevention research through newsletters and other periodic communications.
  • Identify and oversee necessary updates and revisions to the HPTN website and keep the information current by working closely with members of the HPTN information and communications committee.
  • Develop and implement plans to communicate about HPTN studies to HPTN members, communities and study participants.
  • (Work with clinical research managers and study teams to develop study-specific communication plans, as needed).
  • Highlight key publications that include HPTN members.
  • Coordinate and work with HPTN community engagement staff on development of materials and strategic interactions at key HIV prevention conferences in the US and elsewhere.
  • Work with HTPN community program staff and leadership to engage external groups and ambassadors of HIV Prevention such as AMFAR, AVAC, GCM, TAC.
  • Develop interest pieces about HPTN research studies or network members for the HPTN website and promote, as appropriate, in relevant local media.
  • Lead the planning and execution of the Annual Meeting for the network.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public health or related field and 6-9 years relevant experience; or MS/MA in journalism, communications, marketing, public health or related field, and at least 5-7 years of experience in a communications role.
  • Ability to travel 25%.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Prior experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO).
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects to meet short deadlines.
