Internship - Microfinance and Rural Development

Since 2002, Balajee Sewa Sansthan has been active in spreading awareness about health and hygiene, water, sanitation, education, and social evils prevalent among economically and socially disadvantaged people. Its mission is to provide need based financial services to economically and socially disadvantaged groups creating opportunities for self employment and economic development.
About the Job: 
Balajee Sewa Sansthan is seeking a candidate for Internship - Microfinance and Rural Development. S/he will be responsible for working on temporary internship projects for a definite duration and submit a project report with their findings and recommendations.
Tasks and Responsibilities: 
  • Microfinance:
    • Conduct studies on various models of bank linkage (JLG-Bank linkage, SHG-Bank linkage, microenterprise finance model) with key suggestions on how to expand the reach of these services in underserved geographies of Himalayan region in North India;
    • Conduct social performance management (SPM) of clients enrolled in microfinance keeping progress out of poverty index (PPI) as base;
    • Identify the demand and supply gap of credit to microenterprises in Himalayan region and suggest the project viability of financing the enterprises by MFIs;
    • Assist MFI in diversifying the services provided to rural masses ranging from credit supply to business development services resulting into creation of more livelihood opportunities;
    • Development of a credit scoring tool measuring the credit consumption capacity of a household resulting limited chances of over indebtness to an individual client;
    • Document the success stories of microfinance clients of organization with a focus on improvement of issues related to women empowerment;
    • Provide strategic guidance in process improvement of MFI towards building a sound loan tracking system measuring the client dropout ratio and the client’s need of varied products in subsequent loan cycles.
  • Rural education:
    • Prepare online and offline teaching tools to be utilized in rural government and budget private schools of Himalayan region with an aim to provide assistance to existing local human resources engaged in education sector for an effective delivery of teaching material resulting an enhanced learning outcomes of students;
    • Document the activity based teaching practiced across globe and sharing the best practices for improvement in existing teaching techniques in schools;
    • Prepare of an annual lesson plan for subjects of maths, science, and literature to provide a systematic guide for teaching to school and train individual instructors to use it effectively;
    • Conduct physical teaching exercises time to time in assigned schools to further elaborate complex topics in subjects of study depending upon the expertise over a matter;
    • Conduct an assessment test to examine the impact of innovative teaching practices adopted in schools specially the effectiveness of e-learning model in learning improvement;
    • Carry out a market research activity in budget private schools over preference towards adopting the e-learning technique for interactive teaching and also the per head cost benefit analysis for this model.
  • Community based tourism:
    • Promote rural home stays and community based tourism located in  Kumaon and Garhwal region of Uttarakhand creating an additional source of livelihood for local villagers as well as conservation of folk art and culture;
    • Identify activities to be included in Himalayan gram ranging from religion tourism to rural tourism exploring the financial feasibility and operational sustainability for organization;
    • Choose right marketing mix for promotion of tourism activities under the brand Himalayan gram with more emphasis on social networking channels;
    • Actively involve in designing and finalizing the advertisement materials like website, brochure, pamphlets, banners, and signages;
    • Preparation of business plan of Himalayan gram consisting of financial projections of next five years consisting profit and loss statement, cash flow statement and balance sheet along with discussing the complete operational model of execution;
    • Identify the international funding agency working on livelihood creation in developing economies for potential partnership in rural tourism as well as other livelihood promotion activities with an effort to obtain sufficient grant to support such activities;
    • Follow up with local funding agency NABARD and UPASAC on current proposal submitted for funding on rural tourism with personal talks and presentations;
    • Tie up with several European travelling agencies interested in exploring tourism activity in India and promote Himalayan gram as a brand among the European community;
    • Write to major ten European universities preferably one from one country for a potential collaboration with organization where students from these institutions can visit India to study on sustainable tourism.
  • Livelihood generation activities:
    • Identify the key sustainable projects on livelihood generation in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand and assist through fundraising by linking the projects with international funding organizations;
    • Study the current mix of microfinance activity in Dehradun district done by organization with an emphasis on client selection and credit delivery process;
    • Identify the clients doing income generation activities with loan investment in dairy, poultry, non farm sector in the operational area of organization;
    • Structure the formal business plan for the identified income generation activities with consultancy of business owner discussing majorly the operational, financial and marketing issues related to business;
    • Write grant proposals to international funding agency keeping in target the fund required by microfinance entrepreneur for scaling up their business;
    • Prepare proposal for local financial institutions with major focus on banking institutions in the required format for a potential tie up between entrepreneur and financial institution;
    • Represent organization to at least 10 banking institutions, SIDBI and NABARD with proposal made for business collaboration;
    • Design a newsletter discussing the livelihood activities promoted by organization in Uttarakhand and sending the same to major Indian and international funding agency.
