Open Pit Support Manager

We are now seeking an Open Pit Support Manager to join our Mining and Technical Group based in any of our offices, but spending significant time in Johannesburg.

Accountable to Vice President, Mining Operations, this role is responsible for leading the team that generates new mining models and processes to make a step change in the operating business and provides expert advice and solutions to all Regions and Sites to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

• Identify and design systems and processes that can make an impact on business performance.
• Working with the site General Manager’s, ensuring the setting of appropriate plans and delivery against these plans for the AngloGold Ashanti Open Pit Operations

Safety

• Development and review of mining standards for the above and ensure they are aligned with the corporate standard
• Assist the above operations with the implementation of standards, group policies and put in processes to monitor adherence

Monitoring Performance

• Analyse compliance to budgets/forecasts both in terms of production and cost
• Benchmarking performance and costs, both internally and externally
• Detail true health of the operation to identify target areas for both risks and opportunities
• Using available data, work with the operations to identify improvement opportunities and assist sites in implementation
• Develop productivity reports on the use of Capital

Health of Discipline

• Working with the sites, identify gaps in operations Resources/capabilities and fill in gaps where needed. Work with sites to permanently address gaps
• Work with the sites for coaching of emerging staff and identify opportunities for training and rotations
• Identify development opportunities for mining related staff

Operations Support

• Provide support to the operations on any operational issue for three to four sites. This can be based on identified risks or opportunities or as requested from the GM or Regional Senior Vice President
• Assist operations with any minor projects either identified by either site or the Mining Operations team
• Promote innovation and the development and adoption of new technologies. Provide leadership and guidance in this area, linking technical operational reviews of mineral assets to realize the development of potential innovation needs that can leverage value for the company

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Qualification in Mining Engineering, post graduate preferred
• Significant experience in mining operations either at Manager level or in a Technical specialist role
• Ability to identify step change technologies and processes  that can integrate into the business and yield return
• High level of understanding of the business and various components of the value chain
• Ability to work in various global operating environments
• Ability to develop or adapt new systems, products or services that impact a major part of the Organisation and recommend the termination of systems, products or services that are no longer viable
• Passion, commitment with significant personal effort to deliver future value
• The drive to consistently strive to exceed performance objectives
