Senior Specialist: Mine closure Planning
The Senior Specialist: Mine Closure Planning is accountable for providing technical and coordination services to the Continental Africa Region (CAR) sites to progress their integrated closure planning and implementation in compliance with the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Closure Planning Standard. This role will capacity-build closure planning skills among all disciplines on site and assist sites to integrate closure activities into their daily operations thereby ultimately reducing their closure costs and time requirements. This role will also ensure a collegiate environment with discipline functional heads at a business unit, regional and corporate level.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The role holder has the following accountabilities and authorities:
- Facilitate, coordinate and assist all CARO operational, exploration and project sites to implement the AGA Closure Planning Standard requirements in consultation with the General Manager and site management, Regional and Corporate technical experts.
- Facilitate, coordinate and assist the preparation and implementation of integrated closure plans that are integrated into the business plans and physical mine plans.
- Provide support for closure-related monitoring and evaluation to track major milestones and target dates for each action (implementation or planning), and to provide early warning signs of change for corrective action.
- Assist sites to plan, define, budget and implement the execution of key integrated closure work packages.
- Provide input and review to site project studies, permitting documentation, assessments and the like to ensure closure considerations are included and meet the requirements of the Standard.
- Work closely with technical specialists of all levels to help develop the most appropriate and credible closure options for each area.
- Facilitate, coordinate and assist sites to develop and implement closure planning stakeholder (internal and external) communication commensurate to the life of mine.
- Socialize the requirements and process of implementing the AGA Closure Planning Standard requirements at a site, CARO and Corporate level.
- Work with technical specialists and functional heads at a site, CARO and Corporate level to ensure systems and processes are amended to incorporate the requirements of the AGA Closure Planning Standard
- Provide support and guidance to accountable site managers in all aspects of stakeholder analysis conducted in accordance with requirements commensurate to the life of mine, as the quality and methodology used during closure planning and implementation to close a mine, will impact on the shareholder perception in other countries and will impact on the company’s ability to operate in that particular country again in future.
- Facilitate a collegiate cooperative environment with other technical specialists and functional heads at a site, CARO and corporate level to disseminate progress information, lessons learnt, receive expert technical input and ensure that closure planning requirements are considered and implemented at all levels.
- Work with site managers and relevant disciplines to capacity-build closure planning skills among all disciplines on site.
- Monitor sites progress to ensure they are monitoring and implementing tasks in accordance with closure planning targets in terms of annual budget and performance indicators and are performing periodic cost control and cost analysis.
- Support sites to plan project scope and analyse cost impact on profitability and Business Model.
- Support sites to plan, obtain budget approval and implement the execution of key project work packages, including infrastructure decommissioning, biophysical closure planning, human resources planning, social closure planning.
- Monitor against compliance and progress with the AGA Closure Planning Standard to sites and CARO.
- Raise risks to General Manager and CAR, ensuring that the Plan and implementation is adjusted accordingly, ensuring the best outcome for the business.
- Support sites to produce and implement (as part of their integrated closure plan) a risk management plan, including key risks, constraints and assumptions, planned responses and contingencies (where appropriate) for each.
- Provide project progress reports to all internal CARO and Corporate stakeholders on a quarterly basis, including risks and opportunities.
- Provide constant feedback to General Manager, Site closure champion, and CARO pertaining to critical issues and considerations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Relevant graduate qualification in Mining, Project Management, Social Sciences, or equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the mining industry.
- Experience in developing integrated mine closure plans inclusive of biophysical, social and human resources aspects for all stages of mine life from exploration or prefeasibility through to mine closure.
- Experience in practical and business-oriented solution identification based on specific site characteristics.
- Field experience (preferably in Africa) and demonstrated ability in strategic analysis, design, planning.
- Adequately experienced to maintain credibility with senior operations management, joint venture partners and other internal stakeholders.
- Capability to manage across different areas of professional practices.
- Adequately matured as a person with interpersonal skills to influence people and the business.
- Excellent written and oral communication and report writing skills.
- Fluency in English essential.
- Knowledge of integrated closure planning requirements.
- Demonstrable knowledge of gold-related mineral exploration methods, mine waste disposal methods, mineral processing methods and integrated closure options for all domains.
- Knowledge of strategic and business mine planning processes and models.
- Knowledge of project management and change programs will be beneficial.

REMUNERATION:
Salary will be in accordance with the AngloGold Ashanti Schedule of Salaries.
