Econometric Adviser

April 2014 will see the official launch of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the successor body to the Competition Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. This new organisation will build on the existing work of the UK competition authorities to promote competition, within and outside the UK. Our mission is to make markets work well in the interests of consumers, businesses and the economy. We have set ourselves the goal of becoming even better - as a world-leading competition and consumer authority. For those who join us at this formative time it offers a uniquely exciting professional opportunity.
As Econometric Adviser you will be part of a small specialist team ensuring that CMA’s work benefits from expert econometric advice and evaluation. This will see you leading on analysis of particular cases or projects and offering advice and scrutiny to colleagues or external providers to ensure consistency and high quality econometrics analysis at all times. You will also be an advocate for econometrics within CMA and with partners, working to enhance general understanding of the subject and its potential contribution, which will include participation in training programmes. Your excellent technical knowledge in econometrics should be complemented by effective project management skills, ensuring that projects are defined by clear communication and agreed outcomes and expectations.
We expect you to have a post-graduate economics degree with evidence of specialisation in econometrics. This should be further enhanced by practical professional experience in a competition or consumer policy environment where communicating econometric analysis to non-technical audiences has been important. A proven capacity to contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and projects and good understanding of industrial organisation and competition economics will be essential.
