£13,726 per annum (upsurge in 2014/2015)offered on a 3 year basis, depending upon satisfactory progress
The John Doran Memorial Scholarship is a funded full-time PhD studentship awarded in memory of Dr John Doran.
One Scholarship is available for entry in 2014/15, to be awarded competitively across applications received from candidates wishing to undertake research leading to the award of PhD for a project investigating the period c. 300-1100AD centred on the Northern and Central Welsh Marches.
The project should focus on how power is manifested in the landscape and its change and transitions over time particularly highlighting how this may inform our understanding of settlement and landscape in the early medieval period in this region.  Possible themes in the project might include: the relationship and change of boundaries and enclosed sites in the region and the interplay and relationship between secular and ecclesiastic power as manifested in the landscape.
The project should include a wide range of archaeological evidence and include collation of existing and analysis of new landscape data, such as: documentary sources, grey literature including finds, the National Mapping Programme, Historic Environment Records, Landscape Characterisation and LiDAR data and analysis.
The candidate should provide a project outline that exhibits familiarity with: a range of landscape archaeology methodologies, a range of LiDAR processing and visualisation techniques and GIS proficiency. Experience working with datasets from the Northern and Central Welsh Marches area is desirable as is experience of working on historic period landscapes.
For an informal discussion of possible projects in these areas, applicants may contact Dr Meggen Gondek (m.gondek@chester.ac.uk).
