Communications Expert, USAID DRG-LER

Background
Social Impact (SI) is a Washington, DC-area international development management consulting firm. We provide a full range of innovative program evaluation, management consulting, technical assistance, and training services to strengthen international development programs, organizations and policies. Our global services are in the areas of democracy and governance, health and education, agriculture, the environment, and economic growth.
Objective
Social Impact is seeking a Communications Expert to work with the Learning Team at USAID's Center of Excellence on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance (DRG Center) to develop a strategy for communicating its work and results to internal and external audiences. The Learning Team is one of eight teams within the DRG Center, and is focused on learning and evaluation to advance the USAID mission and to advance the democracy and governance field. The Learning Team manages evaluation and research projects, establishes partnerships with the academic community, and provides methodological support to the DRG Center's other teams as well as USAID Missions.
The Communications Expert will have approximately 20 work days to conduct these tasks. The consultancy is anticipated to begin late summer/early fall 2014.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a communications plan for the Learning Team, targeting various internal stakeholders;
  • Create a package of standard publicity/communications templates and other products (i.e. flyers, one-pagers, success stories, briefs, etc.) to improve outreach and understanding of the DRG Center Learning Team's work; and,
  • Work with the DRG Center Communications Specialist to support the development a DRG Center-wide communications strategy, as needed.
Requirements
The Communication Expert must have:
  • An advanced degree in Communications, International Development or other relevant field and;
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience in communications; some USAID experience required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international development at the programmatic or policy level, preferably in the democracy and governance sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating successful and sustainable communications strategies for international development clients to determine appropriate messaging and methods/platforms of information dissemination and outreach.
  • Demonstrated experience developing standard publicity and communications templates.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for a variety of audiences; demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate small group or individual discussions with stakeholders at different levels in an organization.
