Human Rights Watch is seeking an Associate to provide research and advocacy assistance and administrative and clerical support to its São Paulo office.  This position reports to the Brazil Director based in São Paulo and the Operations Coordinator based in New York.
Responsibilities:
1. Prepare, draft, edit, format and distribute documents such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and web content;
2. Translate documents to and from English and Portuguese;
3. Provide research and advocacy assistance to the office staff;
4. Respond to public queries,  visitors, and interact with media professionals;
5. Schedule and make travel arrangements for office staff;
6. Prepare for and take minutes at meetings;
7. Recruitand coordinateinterns;
8. Assist with managing local logistical issues, such as finding drivers, fixers, and translators;
9. Maintain the smooth and effective functioning of the officeincluding stocking office supplies and handling facilities issues;
10. Liaise with suppliers and negotiate service contracts in a cost effective manner;
11. Manage the bank account and cash flow;
12. Record all monthly financial activity into the organization’s financial system;
13. Run internal financial reports and prepare external financial reports for the Accountant;
14. Act as the local HR representative and assist with the implementation of HR policies locally;Assist with the recruitment, on-boarding and departure of local staff, fellows, and consultants;
15. Liaise with the local phone service and internet providers to troubleshoot phone and internet problems;
16. Liaise with IT/helpdesk to troubleshoot computer problems and back up and update network files as necessary;
17. Conduct word processing, photocopying, filing, faxing, answering phones, processing incoming mail, and answering enquiries;
18. Assist with the São Paulo office build-up and renovation as necessary, including liaising with architects and builders; and
19. Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education:  A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in management, public relations, law, journalism, international relations, social science, nonprofit or project management, or a related field is required. Certifications in finance/accounting and/or administration are highly desirable.
Experience:Minimum two years of experience working in an office environment and/or assisting in field research is required. Financial and/or administrative experience preferably in a multinational organization is highly desirable.

1. Excellent interpersonal and management skills.
2. Ability to function under pressure, prioritize competing demands with minimal supervision and handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
3. Excellent organizational, administrative, financial and analytical skills are required.
4. Excellent written and spoken skills in English and Portuguese are required.  Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
5. Demonstrated ability to work well both independently as well as part of a team.
6. Good judgment, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
7. Experience working for an international, preferably human rights organization in a support function is highly desirable.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current Brazilian work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
