Head of Legal Affairs Division

EUMETSAT - European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites

Darmstadt, Germany

Deliver a legal framework fit for the space age.
EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 member states, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, land and ocean that deliver vital data 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our data contribute to weather forecasts that protect lives and property across Europe and to monitoring of our changing climate. From 2016 onwards, EUMETSAT will also operate the Copernicus Sentinel 3,4,5 and 6 missions on behalf of the European Union and provide data services to the Copernicus marine and atmospheric services and their users.
In this influential position, you will assume responsibility for the provision of legal advice to the entire organisation, including the Delegate Bodies, Director-General and senior management, whilst also taking ownership of our Data Policy. In particular, you will manage the accession of new Member States, negotiate cooperation agreements, and establish the legal framework for our satellite programmes. At the same time, you will implement licensing schemes for our data, products and services, publish our legal documents and provide strong leadership to your Division, giving you a rare blend of managerial and legal challenges.
Alongside a good Law degree, you will ideally hold a specialist qualification in Public International Law and will certainly bring extensive legal experience at a pan-European level. This will have given you considerable expertise in institutional law and international civil service law, backed by a pragmatic approach and real flair for formulating clear and convincing arguments on complex and contentious matters. Finally, it goes without saying that you will be a seasoned people and task manager with fluency in English and a working knowledge of French, ideally backed by some command of German.
Attractive employment conditions are offered, in terms of salary, comprehensive benefits including health and social welfare provision, and extensive relocation assistance if applicable.
