You will join the research group of Professor French, the group has a strong focus on vaccine preventable disease including pneumococcal disease, Influenza, Rotavirus, Group B streptococcus and other bacterial causes of severe sepsis. The research group has extensive activities in overseas sites and whilst this post will not necessitate any travel, opportunities exist for interaction with groups working on similar vaccine related issues in Africa.
This post has been established to support the development of Merseyside as a centre for conducting vaccine efficacy studies and understanding vaccine effectiveness in routine use. Your initial work will be to use routine data sources to understand the burden of key diseases, rotaviral diarrhoea and pneumococcal infection, and link these to vaccine uptake. As well as university colleagues, you will be expected to interact with epidemiologists from Public Health England, local NHS trusts, primary care services and with members of Liverpool Health Partners (LHP). LHP is a partnership of the local NHS trusts and academic institutes to support and drive innovation and research. A central task of this organisation is to make integrated data from primary and secondary care available for researchers. It is expected that you will play a role in helping to shape and develop this process.
You should have a PhD in epidemiology or a postgraduate degree in epidemiology or related area with appropriate experience. Individuals with experience of working with NHS data are particularly encouraged to apply.
You will be expected to work towards appropriate academic development depending on your qualifications and experience. In the case of Postdoctoral Scientists this will be towards a personal fellowship application.  It will be possible to register for a PhD in those without a doctorate.
The position is intended for an individual wishing to pursue an academic career in infectious diseases epidemiology. The position would suit an individual wishing to submit for fellowship funding in the next 2-4 years or wishing to register for a PhD. The post is available for two years, with the possibility of extension.
