Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a 'platform of services' that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: "MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose". Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.

The Division of General Services provides service functions throughout the IAEA such as travel and transport support, facilities management, archives and records management, and management of the VIC Commissary. It has five sections.

The Commissary Management Section manages the Commissary at the Vienna International Centre. The Commissary is a tax and duty-free store that is operated under the authority of the Director General of the IAEA. It was established as a self-sustaining and non-profit making operation in order to facilitate the purchase of limited quantities of consumer goods by the diplomats of Permanent Missions of Member States accredited to the UN organizations, staff members of the UN organizations based at the VIC as well as of other authorized organizations.

Main Purpose

Under the day-to-day supervision of one of the Team Supervisors and the general supervision of the Unit Head, the incumbent performs cashier as well as shelf-replenishment duties. He/she is expected to perform all his/her routine duties independently.

Working Relationships

The Cashier interacts with Commissary customers at all levels on an ongoing basis on day-to-day issues concerning the shop environment (e.g. product locations, prices, special offers, etc.) and exchanges work-related information with other Commissary staff.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Operate cash register scanning merchandise with barcode price label scanner; check if billed amounts match the number of items purchased; receive payments from customers which may be in cash or debit cards. Count received cash payments based on change indicated on the cash register, return accurate change to customers. At the end of the shift, print out the "end of day cash register" slip and hand the total cash intake with the slip to the Supervisor. If required, collect change money from the bank and take cash intake to the bank. Ensure proper maintenance of cash register and report problems to Supervisors.
  • For products not labelled with barcodes, look up on the shelf label the relevant Commissary article numbers and key them in by hand in the cash register.
  • Ensure that only authorized persons are allowed to make purchases by checking grounds passes and pictures at the cash register. Interact with customers and address routine queries/complaints from customers; refer more complex queries/complaints to Supervisors.
  • Receive and open cases received from the Warehouse; open and unpack merchandise, check expiry dates; ensure proper display of the merchandise, maintain a tidy Salesroom, stock and replenish shelves with new or transferred goods in accordance with the first-in-first-out principle and check intactness of packaging. For products not labelled with barcodes, print out and attach to the product the relevant Commissary article numbers. Use mobile computing devices to check availability of stock and order maximum quantities from the Warehouse to ensure adequate stocking levels on the shelves.
  • If assigned, act as backstop for Sales Clerk.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010, which is the IAEA standard.
  • Good health, physical fitness and strength to carry out strenuous work.
  • High degree of accuracy to identify and label merchandise as well as to handle cash transactions.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Strong customer orientation with the ability to deal with customers and staff at all levels in a professional manner.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of one year of working experience involving cashier duties, including operation of related Electronic Data Processing equipment.
  • Experience in data entry applications and basic clerical experience.
  • English language test (Level 3) to IAEA standard.
  • Language skills: Good knowledge of written and spoken English. Knowledge of another official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an advantage.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €27 089 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
