INTERNSHIP WITH THE SECRETARIAT OF CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

COOPERATION AT THE SUBNATIONAL LEVEL

Organizational Settings and Reporting

This internship will be located in Montreal, Canada. The internship is for an initial period three (3) months with a possibility for extension for another three (3) months depending on the needs of the hosting office.

The internship is UNPAID and full time (Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.) Interns work five (5) days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office in which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of the Programme Officers on Stakeholder Engagement and Subnational implementation, the intern will:

• Strengthen cooperation between the cities involved in the Advisory Committee of the Convention, notably those in Brazil (Curitiba, Sao Paulo, Sorocaba) and Canada (Montreal) in consultation with ICLEI (CBC/Cape town and SAMS/Sao Paulo), by assisting in the identification of prospective areas (food security, greenbelts, ecosystem valuation, CBI), coordinating messages to the COP in Korea and liaising with the respective National Focal Points for information and possibly joint event organization at COP 12;
• Produce case studies (4-6) on solutions identified for posting on CHM and ICLEI sites;
• Support cooperation (on the Green Wave) between island cities and non-island partners, to identify best practices in urban biodiversity at subnational level on the IDB 2014 theme; and
• Assist the Secretariat in related outreach and partnership development tasks.

Education

The applicant must be:

1. enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
2. be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
3. have graduated with a university degree (as defined in bullets 1 & 2 above) and, if selected must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.

3. Send a letter of endorsement from his/her educational institution, attesting to the fact that he/she is currently a registered student and will continue to be enrolled for the envisaged period of the internship. A letter from any one of the following personnel is suggested:

o Dean of Students or Dean of Faculty 
o Registrar
o Placement Office

Please ensure that an official letterhead or an official seal is used for the endorsement letter. This endorsement should be attached to the application. Candidates are advised that their application forms will not be processed without proper and adequate endorsement.
