European Media Relations Manager

AFME is the leading trade association for the wholesale banking industry in Europe. We focus on a wide range of market, business and banking regulation issues and offer a pan-European perspective, bringing to bear deep policy and technical expertise and constructive influence with European and global policymakers. We are looking to enhance our relationships with the media in London and continental Europe by hiring a European Media Relations Manager. The role will be based in London or Brussels, with frequent travel to other European capitals. A key focus of the role will be the international (i.e. non-English speaking) media, to include foreign correspondents in London, Brussels, Frankfurt, etc. as well as the banking and policy reporters on the ground elsewhere in Europe. The role will also require liaising with technical financial and banking media in English and other languages.
The work will be intellectually stimulating and broaden a candidate's outlook and skills.
Key accountabilities

Communications
  • Helping to develop and execute AFME's international communications plan, conducting briefings with journalists in Brussels, Frankfurt and other European centres, and with international correspondents based in London;
  • Supporting AFME’s engagement in policy and legislative initiatives relating to financial services and markets in the European Union;
  • Assisting in delivering AFME press conferences in key EU capitals.
Developing content
  • Developing media-friendly materials dealing with complex regulatory subjects across the range of wholesale market issues;
  • Writing briefing materials in English and ideally in French and German and/or other European languages.
Relationship development and management
  • Building relationships with journalists based in Brussels, Frankfurt and other major European cities, and with international correspondents based in London, in order to effectively deploy content and messages;
  • Building productive relationships with both relevant people in member firms and with colleagues across the AFME organisation.

Desirable:
  • A good understanding of European financial services and their regulation and the financial services industry;
  • Material experience of the European legislative and regulatory process;
  • Experience of working for a financial firm or trade association.
Knowledge skills and experience Essential:
  • Fluent English and the ability to work in at least one other European language;
  • At least 3 years’ work experience, perhaps in a government department, a PR/Public Affairs agency, at a major financial institution or as a journalist on a specialist publication;
  • Degree level education;
  • Experience of dealing with the media, particularly the continental European media.
Desirable:
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification.
