Research Associate II (Science Associate) in Durham, NC

The Research Associate II will assist the Director of Scientific Affairs in the Global Health, Population and Nutrition (GHPN) Group. S/he will ensure the quality of research being implemented across the organization by reviewing health-related protocols in advance of review by the organization’s human subject’s protection committee and by assisting the Director of the GHPN Science Team. Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating and assuring technical review of research protocols prior to submission to the human subject’s protection committee, bringing in additional technical expertise including internal bio statistical review, to ensure that all research conducted is methodologically sound.
  • Developing and communicating tools, checklists and other processes to facilitate timely research review that will both increase quality of research while building capacity across the organization.
  • Maintaining a dialogue and technical exchange with field and regional counterparts which informs development of strategies and tools to improve the quality of research undertaken by FHI 360 staff
  • Assisting the Science Team by providing input into strategic planning for research and science across the organization and by managing office planning, timelines and budgets associated with the Science Team.
  • Identifying and addressing research quality problems using both a reactive and pro-active approach, in order to build research capacity across the organization.
  • Working closely with the Office of International Research Ethics to ensure human subjects protection in research protocols, and assist in developing relevant policies, procedures, training and tools for cross-organizational dissemination.
  • Managing the Global Health Research Fellowship and UNC-FHI 360 Fellowship programs, including associated budgets, annual recruitment and placement process, tracking and supervision of the Fellows.
  • Managing a system to review, clear and track abstracts and manuscripts for submission and presentation.
  • Assisting the Science Team in support of the activities of the Global Science & Technical Leadership Working Group and other GHPN-wide scientific focus, including budget planning and management.
  • May engage in independent research, especially related to ongoing programs; activities to include designing and implementing research and research-to-practice.
Qualifications:
  • MS/MA in public health or related field and 5+ years of research study experience with project management, research methodology, and study implementation.
  • Knowledge and experience in health-related scientific research, with strong background in research methodology, including hypothesis-driven research processes and protocol & data collection form development
  • Outstanding ability to interact effectively with experts and collaborators across multiple disciplines, program areas, and cultures.
  • Proven track record of participating in technical aspects of proposal development.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed, largely to developing countries
  • Record of peer reviewed publications and presentations at scientific/technical meetings preferred.
  • Fluent written and oral English required; ability to speak French or Portuguese an asset.
