Research Engineer / Post-doc, High-Tech - Université Catholique de Louvain

Description
The Image and Signal Processing Group (ISPGroup) of the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium (UCL) offers one position for a research engineer or post-doc to work on the design of an '''Ultra Low Power Compressive Video Acquisition System, for Autonomous Deployment in Wireless Networks.'''
This requires (i) video/image data compression, to limit the power consumption associated to data transmission; and (ii) low power implementation of the video coder. The project will first consider conditional replenishment and conventional decorrelative image coders as a benchmark.
After this first phase, the research will cover novel compressed sensing (CS) approaches, and associated reconstruction methods, to improve the trade-off between power consumption and reconstructed image quality. In particular, the main research axes will consist in:
  • the development a compressive sensing scheme leveraging the “low-complexity nature” of the observe dynamic scene despite the high-dimensionality of its ambient spatio-temporal domain; for instance by considering linear dynamical systems (LDS) or low-rank/sparse data priors;
  • the design of efficient quantization schemes (e.g., 1-bit, Sigma Delta) of the compressive video measurements in order to jointly reduce the power consumption of the device, maximize the compression ratio of the transmitted data, and optimized the reconstruction quality of the video at the receiver;
  • the implementation of fast reconstruction algorithms to be run at the receiver, e.g., using iterative/greedy solvers or parallelized convex optimization methods.
