Brief Posting Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Demand and Supply Issues (DSI) team in Structural Economic Analysis Division (SEAD). The DSI team is at the centre of the monetary policy process within MA, offering unrivalled opportunities to specialise in both conjuncture and research, and ultimately to be recognised as an ‘expert’ in your field across the directorate and by MPC members themselves. We are looking to hire two analysts at either the senior economist or economist level, with successful applicants able, to some extent, to tailor the roles to their own interests and aspirations.
Department Description
The DSI team has a remit to communicate underlying developments to the MPC across the gamut of the economy: the household sector (including the housing market); the corporate sector and the economy’s productive potential; the public finances and fiscal policy; and external trade (both quantities and prices). The team carries out analysis of the conjuncture in these areas, feeding into, and presenting, the Demand & Output and Supply pre-MPC presentations, as well as being an integral part of the MPC’s quarterly forecast round (with an enhanced ‘challenge’ role following recent changes stemming from the Stockton Review). In addition, we produce longer-term analysis that is published in the Quarterly Bulletin and as Bank of England Working Papers, and there are opportunities for ring fenced research time in the SEAD ‘sandpit’.
There are currently three senior and five junior economists, and a senior Research Assistant in the team, each with their own specialties across and within sectors of the economy. There exists considerable flexibility in role, and the successful candidates would be able to tailor the positions to their own interests and aspirations. As well as joint work within the team and division, DS I economists are involved heavily in, and often lead, cross-divisional (and cross-directorate) Special Project Teams.

Detailed Description
The balance of conjunctural and research responsibilities can be varied to suit the successful candidates’ preferences, but one attraction of the team is that all members have the opportunity to do both.
Key aspects of the role therefore include:
  • Ownership of, and expertise in, at least one area of DSI focus listed above.
  • Production of high quality conjunctural analysis of relevance to current monetary policy decisions.
  • Regular input into a number of pre-MPC presentations and the quarterly forecast round (particularly Key Issues presentations), including challenge of the MPC’s forecast assumptions, and profiles for demand and supply side variables.
  • Delivery of policy relevant longer term research projects, in conjunction with other team/divisional members and also external academics.
  • Production of Quarterly Bulletin articles, Working Papers and journal articles again in conjunction with research collaborators.
  • Development of economic and econometric skills and expertise via specialist courses, the internal ‘TEP’ etc
  • External representation of the Bank at specialist fora, inter-departmental government meetings and research conferences.
