Analyst, Metrics In Arlington VA

Conservation International is committed to conserving natural capital and delivering human well-being through targeted investments. Understanding the contribution of CI efforts to improved human well-being is integral to the organization's business and learning. To advance understanding on the contribution of nature conservation to improved human well-being and strengthen existing evidence base, CI has developed a metrics framework to inform priority setting and monitor progress in achieving institutional goals. Working within a cross-divisional team of experts, the researcher will contribute to development and piloting of an analytical framework to quantify human dependence and/or well-being derived from ecosystem services from site to national scales. This position presents an exciting opportunity to test emerging and innovative approaches to demonstrate benefits to people from nature.

Conservation International is well positioned to enhance the human dimensions of existing indicator frameworks and generate robust case studies in conjunction with our field-based programs. The Betty & Gordon Moore Center for Science & Oceans is looking to expand its social science capacity and expertise on human systems in order to integrate monitoring of social and economic outcomes into CI's institutional reporting. With a minimum of MSc level and demonstrated ability in spatial analyses of social datasets, the researcher's responsibilities would include synthesis of existing datasets on human dependence on ecosystem services, refinement of an analytical framework to quantify dependence in two case studies in Cambodia and Madagascar, and production of guidance documents and publications. Familiarity with existing relevant global and national data streams is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities of the role include:
synthesis of existing global, national, and subnational datasets on human dependence on ecosystem services, in particular those related to freshwater, food provision, and climate adaptation;working with a cross divisional team (whose expertise includes climate change, biophysical modeling of ecosystem services, conservation planning, monitoring and evaluation) to develop and pilot an analytical framework to quantify human dependence and/or well-being derived from ecosystem services;application of analytical framework in two national-scale geographies in collaboration with CI country programs in Madagascar and Cambodia; contribution to final products including a guidance document, distribution maps of potential beneficiaries, estimates of populations benefiting from natural systems, and peer-reviewed publication(s).

The Metrics Analyst will report to the Director of Monitoring & Evaluation within the Metrics Unit of the Moore Center for Science & Oceans. This position works in close collaboration with a cross-divisional team working on institutional metrics.
