Tree Conservation Specialist, The Morton Arboretum

General Summary: The Tree Conservation Specialist provides management support for leading the Arboretum's strategy and action for global tree conservation efforts and is responsible for assisting in the planning, integration, fundraising and development of external partnerships, and implementation of the Arboretum's tree conservation goals.
Job Qualifications:
M.S. in plant science or conservation biology required, ideally in a discipline related to or with a focus on tree science and conservation. At least 3 years experience in a conservation or environmental related organization, ideally in a public garden and/or international setting. Strong interest in and broad knowledge of trees and issues related to conservation. Excellent organizational skills and a capacity to function independently are essential. Ability to comprehend scientific literature, research results, learn and use computer programs through self-study. Strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Flexibility, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of staff and management both internally and externally. Requires strong computer and internet research skills with proficiency at managing files, records, preparation of graphics/visual material. International experience is desired.
Previous Training and Experience:
Ability to participate and support the development of tree species conservation initiatives. Demonstrated skills including program coordination and development, goal implementation, budget oversight, grant writing, and partner/public relations. The position will require a high degree of skill in understanding tree conservation issues, interacting with people, internally and externally, in forming collaborations with partner institutions, and in assisting with developing opportunities for funding via foundation and governmental grants. Must be an energetic, flexible, and self-motivated individual with an enthusiastic, positive and constructive attitude. A proven skill, intellectual curiosity and understanding of trees, conservation issues, and the mission of the Arboretum are required.

Working Conditions
1. Work is performed primarily in an office or meeting setting.
2. Requires prolonged periods of sitting.
3. Some domestic and international travel is required.
