Organizational Setting |
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security formulates and implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 3, “Nuclear Safety and Security”, which encompasses the IAEA’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the safety and security related needs of its Member States. The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is part of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and reports to the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. The IEC serves as the IAEA’s focal point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause and for strengthening Member States’ preparedness for response. |
Main purpose |
The Emergency Preparedness Officer works under the supervision of the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and is responsible for those aspects of the work relating to the development of Safety Standards in the area of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies. He/she advises on emergency preparedness and response aspects, if they are covered, in any other Safety Standards. |
Role |
The Emergency Preparedness Officer is: a technical specialist, providing high-quality professional inputs for the development of Safety Standards in the area of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies, as well as for the development of associated guidelines and technical tools; an analyst, evaluating feedback from their application; and a trainer, lecturing at courses and workshops and representing the IAEA at topical seminars and workshops. |
Partnerships |
The Emergency Preparedness Officer cooperates with relevant staff and experts within the IAEA to ensure that Safety Standards in the area of preparedness for response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies are developed efficiently. He/she also has close interaction with Member States and national counterparts in emergency preparedness programmes in terms of advising on implementation of relevant Safety Standards to contribute to the harmonization of national programmes and criteria for protective actions. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $56 091 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $35 618*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave,pension plan and health insurance.
