Financial Analyst

April 2014 will see the official launch of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the successor body to the Competition Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. This new organisation will build on the existing work of the UK competition authorities to promote competition, within and outside the UK. Our mission is to make markets work well in the interests of consumers, businesses and the economy. We have set ourselves the goal of becoming even better - as a world-leading competition and consumer authority. For those who join us at this formative time it offers a uniquely exciting professional opportunity.
Our Financial Analyst will support our casework and inquiries by collecting, analysing and interpreting financial information, working across a number of sectors. You will ensure that the data we collect is accurate and relevant to each project and subsequently provide effective analysis that can underpin and inform recommendations. In addition your reports and data analysis will be communicated effectively to relevant stakeholders and you will ensure that information is accessible and relevant to a range of audiences. A commitment to high levels of quality assurance throughout will define your work and you should be keen to develop and enhance your knowledge of how individual markets work. Where appropriate, you’ll commission research from external providers, ensuring the same levels of high quality are applied throughout.
You should be degree qualified in a numerate subject and this should be enhanced by a postgraduate accounting qualification. Practical experience of financial analysis and interpretation within a professional environment is important and we expect that you will be able to demonstrate clear ideas on how your skills and knowledge can contribute to CMA’s work. A good awareness of the different business models that are applied across different industries will be important, as will confidence tailoring and presenting complex data and issues to a range of audiences.
