Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The postholder will be responsible for engineering of complex DNA constructs, and coordinating activities with the Monterotondo Transgenic Core to generate novel animal and cellular models of human disease, monitoring and advising on routine recombinant DNA experiments to be carried out by researchers in Monterotondo, and monitoring and advising on DNA recombineering to external collaborators. The postholder will be expected to implement the most recent advanced technologies in this area.
In addition to benchwork the post will also involve administration, operations and management responsibilities:
  • Organising and supervising standard laboratory procedures, monitoring of all consumables;
  • Responsible for interviewing, training and supervision of laboratory personnel;
  • Organisation, systemisation and supervision of vector maps and of a vector database;
  • Coordinating and maintaining facility safety level status with the Monterotondo Safety officer;
  • Directing and co-ordinating activities with the Monterodonto administrative staff;
  • Technical seminars to Monterotondo staff, students and fellows.

Qualifications and Experience

Strong background and experience in molecular biological sciences, with advanced knowledge of DNA recombineering and allied cutting edge technologies is an essential prerequisite. Excellent organizational and communication skills are also require.
