Accounting Specialist, Copenhagen, Denmark

Purpose for the job
Manage and supervise all aspects of the accounting and invoice certification team. Accountable for ensuring that processes and tasks performed by the team are timely, accurate, and in line UNICEF Financial Rules and Regulations and IPSAS (International Public Sector Accounting Standards) where applicable. Also responsible / involved in updating and optimizing the existing procedures and processes in both – in SD and UNICEF context. Performs complex analyses; in charge of audit related queries in area of his/her responsibility.
Summary of key functions/accountabilities:
  • Management of the team (accounting and invoice processing).Establishes, directs and coordinates work plans and sets priorities for the team, and manages the performance. The role encompasses all aspects of the finance function. Develops guidelines appropriate for the timely functioning of the unit to meet critical deadlines. Establishes performance goals and objectives for each year; monitors and advises on the progress to enhance the professional development of the team. Ensures all financial reporting deadlines applicable to his/her area of responsibility are met. Provides training and guidance to staff as needed
  • Participates in a number of internal projects leading to overall process improvements, carries out complex analysis.
    Responsible for troubleshooting of various problems, issues, coordinate resolutions in consultation with relevant colleagues, as applicable.Evaluates operational accounting controls and recommends changes in financial system (e.g. SAP modules) and procedures to meet new requirements. Recommends system and process changes and improvements for effective automation of manual processes.
  • Provides authoritative interpretation and advice on the handling of and accounting (but not limited to) for unusual, difficult and complex issues.
  • Involvement in budgeting, planning activities, assists and/or leads special projects and workflow improvements, leads and/or supports audit related queries and implementation of audit recommendations.

  • Education:
    A completed advanced university degree (Master’s Degree) in Accounting, Business Administration, Financial Management, Economics or other related discipline is required.
    *Accounting qualification – ACCA, CPA, CIMA plus 5 years of hands on accounting experience will be accepted in lieu of advanced degree.
    Experience:
    A minimum of five (5) years (three of which should be working internationally - outside your country of origin) of relevant professional work experience in the areas of accounting, project management, program budgeting, public accounting, donor reporting or operations, month-end closing processes, financial and/or management reporting, and financial risk analysis is required.
    Supervisory experience is required.
    Proven record of process development, documentation and implementation is required.
    Experience with computer applications, particularly Excel, Access or similar relational databases, and SAP or a similar ERP system is required.
    Experience leading and directing IT projects, related to financial management would be an advantage.
    Language:
    Fluency in English is required.
    Knowledge of other UN working languages would be an asset, preferably French.
