Resident Journalism Advisor - Haiti (ENDK Newsroom)

Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.

General Function: Internews is an international media assistance organization whose mission is to empower people worldwide with the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard. In Haiti, Internews’s newsroom allow up to 12 local journalists to produce daily news and information features on humanitarian assistance and other information critical to the affected population’s survival along with magazine features that provide deeper insight. Topics covered by the Internews-Haiti radio program focus on issues of key importance to the affected population such as where they can access various kinds of humanitarian assistance, progress evaluating the safety of people’s homes, and how to stay healthy. ENDK journalists’ choice of topics and program design are driven by data collected by the Internews-Haiti research team via a SMS information line, focus groups, and face-to-face surveys. Additionally, Internews trains and mentors journalists and mangers from 35 partner radio stations to future build reporting and station operations skills.

SCOPE OF WORK: • Oversee the production of radio programs targeted at Haitian - residence in Port au Prince • Ensure daily production meets standards. • Provide one-on-one training and mentoring for ENDK journalists and technicians, as well as to the journalists on exchange. • Liaise with partner radio stations • Supervise the Radio.HT website daily • Oversee the production and distribution of the ENDK run-downs • Compile weekly short reports highlight project successes and challenges • Track and collect the “best of” stories • Formally evaluate the progress/ skill development of ENDK Journalists and technicians, and of journalists on exchange • Coordinate ENDK/ Partner station exchanges • Conduct follow-up calls with participating station managers and journalists to determine training satisfaction and/or additional training requests • Prepare and assemble materials for interim and final reports, in compliance with donor guidelines • Strategize with Project Director on project development. • Maintain relationships with colleagues, partner stations, and donors through reporting

QUALIFICATIONS: • Ability to work to professional broadcast standards in French . • Fluent in spoken English and written English • Minimum of 7 years experience as a senior journalist – recent experience an asset • International experience in journalism and radio production training, preferably with special knowledge of humanitarian reporting. • Knowledge of Haiti an asset • Knowledge of Haitian Creole an asset • Desire and ability to train journalists in source finding and accurate reporting • Strong critical thinking and writing skills, excellent communication skills • Strong organizational skills and ability to communicate them • High level of computer literacy • Practice of digital reporting and analysis a plus (blog, publication through digital medias…) • Significant overseas working experience • Experience working in a demanding, stressful, and dangerous situations with respect of basic security rules • Experience living in location with scarce comfort and multiple logistical challenges • Experience of sharing habitation with respect of others and common rules of hygiene • Team-building skills and the ability to manage a diverse staff • Cultural sensitivity • Ability to work under pressure with short deadlines in short terms projects • Ability to communicate about their work and provide reports in French and in English • Ability to train inexperienced journalists in sound recording and digital editing techniques an asset
