Regional Director, Asia, BBC Media Action

BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. We do this through our focus mainly on health, governance and human rights and humanitarian/resilience work. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s). BBC Media Action is largely funded by external grants, mainly from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union, UN agencies and charitable foundations.

Role
As Regional Director, Asia you’ll lead and manage our work in the region. This is a senior role, with the responsibility for overseeing the development of country and regional strategies and portfolios across Media Action’s key thematic areas. Managing Country Directors who themselves lead production and support teams of locally and internationally recruited staff, you’ll also lead a team of London based Projects Managers who provide daily support. With understanding of media and development, you will ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to expected development and editorial standards. You’ll work with the Director of Programmes, other Regional Directors and the Advisory team to produce rapid and effective responses to major emergencies. While ensuring that correct procedures for registration and employment, health and safety and organisational risk are followed, you’ll make certain that BBC Media Action is compliant with relevant regulations. Building & developing effective partnerships with broadcasters, other institutions, NGOs and donors is also a key aspect of this role.
Requirements
We need your experience of media and/or development (preferably both) at a senior level and you should have a proven track record of getting results. Your sound understanding of development issues, particularly as they relate to Asia will be coupled with your proven ability to raise funds, particularly from large institutional donors. With the proven ability to monitor income and expenditure, you’ll be able to manage budgets in excess of £5million. You’ll need the credibility to work at a senior level and to target and present to specific audiences effectively, both internally and externally. We need you to promote BBC Media Action amongst opinion formers and decision makers and your strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal and will help you do this. And you will also have demonstrable experience of working with outside donor agencies with a clear understanding of their priorities and motivations.
