Patents, trademarks and other intellectual property rights form vital and high-priority elements of the Sandvik business operations. Sandvik Intellectual Property AB (SIP) is a part of Group Function Legal with global responsibility for the coordination and integration of Group IP operations, including protecting and enforcing IP rights.
This role is a member of the Product Area Patent team at Sandvik Intellectual Property/Sandvik Hyperion.

Key performance areas
As a Patent Agent/Attorney, you will provide Intellectual Property (IP) services, mainly in the field of Patents & Designs, to support Sandvik Hyperion. A key function of this role will be securing the business model of the Sandvik Group and further strengthening the offer to the market of products and services with maximum added value for the customers. This role is based at our Worthington, OH facility.
Additionally, the Patent Agent/Attorney will:
- Liaise with – and provide counseling for – inventors, project managers, R&D managers and product managers
- Perform patentability analyses
- Assist in avoiding infringements and ensure that new products can be launched in the market, as well as in the invention disclosures evaluation process
- Perform patentability assessments
- Ensure that inventions and other intellectual property developed within Sandvik receive proper protection and attention
- Assist in performing and reporting competitor patent surveillance
- Prepare and prosecute patent applications and oppositions
- Conduct Freedom to Operate analysis and Clearance analysis
- Assist in the education and mentoring of SIP Patent Engineers
- Arrange IP education for the Business Area: e.g. for R&D engineers, product managers, etc. Enforcement of Patent & Design rights
As a Patent Agent/Attorney, you may be required to travel.
Your profile
The Patent Agent/Attorney should possess a minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, or other relevant academic degree, with a Master’s degree preferred. Registration before the US Patent and Trademark Office is required. Two to five years of IP experience in a law firm, the Patent Office or a corporate legal patent department required. You have excellent knowledge of the patenting process, from idea to granted patent, and possess a high level of competence with IP docketing systems. The Patent Agent/Attorney also should have strong knowledge of opposition proceedings in at least one jurisdiction, IP enforcement and IP competitor monitoring. SAP front end experience is preferred, and strong Excel skills are necessary.
