Director of Center of Excellence on Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change, Asian Institute of Technology (CoE SDCC, AIT)

I. Background of the position

Center of Excellence of (CoE) of Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change (SDCC) SDCC was launched at an international conference held at AIT in Pathumthani, Thailand, from 24 to 25 September 2009. The goal of the SDCC is to consolidate the Institute’s research efforts and broaden its networks and partnerships by providing a platform to discuss and launch shared initiatives and pool resources to effectively address issues and challenges in sustainable development and climate change. The area of focus for AIT Research Strategy 2012-2016 includes five thematic areas: Vulnerability and disaster risk reduction, Water and land resources management for sustainable production and consumption, Urban and rural quality of life and sustainability, Low carbon and cleaner production technologies and management, Business and innovation models for a green economy.

The CoE SDCC intend to appoint a full time Director, with the main task will be to implement the AIT Research Strategy process, coordinate various projects with partners/donors, participating in events related to climate change to disseminate the research carried out at AIT. The selected person will have to work closely with the faculty and scientific staff and help in the creation of strong teams within the institute.

II. Scope of work

The Director of CoE SDCC will be responsible for defining and maintaining the strategic direction of the center as well as the research and development goals of centre. The Director of CoE SDCC is expected to be able to transform the AIT Research Strategy 2012-2016 into an action plan involving research and development projects. He/she will be responsible for utilization of the research outcomes in technical and social sciences.


III. Reporting line

Director of CoE SDCC will report to the Vice President responsible for Research at AIT.

IV. Location

AIT main campus, Pathumthani province, Thailand.

V. The Terms of Employment

This position will initially be for a period of 2 years with the possibility of an extension subject to organizational need and regular performance assessment.

The Selection Criteria of the Position

- Ph.D or equivalent in the area of Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, natural
-Science or development related area.
- Proven experience in providing strategic direction to, and manage large, complex projects;
- Good understanding of climate change adaptation and mitigation issue, and, at least, have a very strong knowledge in one of thematic area of AIT Research Strategy;
- Having adequate experience of building and leading high performing teams in a cross-cultural context;
- Understanding of social inclusivity and gender equality and the implications for program implementation;
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills;
- Familiarity with international donor systems and requirements;
- Having broad experience in managing projects throughout Asia.

Remuneration and Benefits

The selected candidate will be receiving remuneration according to his/her experience and will be given the employment benefit based on his level of employment as regulated by the AIT Human Resources Department.
