Position description: WASH Sustainability Director, WASH Advocates
WASH Advocates is t e successor organization to Water Advocates, the first independent, full-time advocacy organization within the United State s dedicated to increasing the amount and
effectiveness of funding for safe drinking water, sanitation , and hygiene (WASH) in developing countries . WASH Advocates (WA) seeks to substantially increase awareness of the global WASH challenge and the amount and effectiveness o f US public a nd private funding directed to this crisis.
Advocacy for WASH still pales in comparison to other international development causes. WA supports the US WASH community in moving the US Government and US citizens into a stronger global leadership position on safe drinking water and sanitation on several fronts, including the level of international development assistance ; general awareness of the global water and sanitation crisis; sustainability of WASH programming; private and corporate philanthropic efforts; prioritization of WAS H within the US Department of State and USAID; and the integration of WASH and other global development activities.
Description: The WASH Sustainability Director reports to the CEO and is a peer to the four other directors. He/she will work in th e WASH Advocates office in Washing ton, DC. At the outset o f the engagement, he/she will develop a work plan in cooperation with colleagues. The primary duties of the WAS H Sustainability Director include:
• Develop a strategy to enhance the accountability, transparency, monitoring and sustainability of WASH investments; build momentum for sustainable WASH programming by leading/contributing to dialogues on accountability tools and assessments, core indicators, and the technical, financial, and social facets of WASH sustainability;
• Work with public and private sector organizations involved in WASH to achieve and demonstrate lasting results from WASH sector investments;
• Create concrete tools and methodologies that can be adopted by implementers, funders, and advocates to develop a more unified and consistent story of success;
• Use creative communication methods to deliver sustainability messages to the WASH sector and beyond; coordinate development of tools for influence (written, oral, and multimedia) that support WASH Advocates’ key sustainability messages;
• Lead sustainability convenings on a) WASH as an individual
Development priority and b ) on the contributions that sustainable WASH program s make toward progress on other development challenges (e.g. health, education, poverty alleviation).
On a case by case basis, the Director will:
• Serve as a pro bono philanthropy advisor and corporate social responsibility consultant focusing on ways to incorporate
Sustainability into philanthropic efforts;
• Work with W A’s Communications Director and others to help Create and support campaigns that lead WA in a direction that is most useful for the issue and the sector;
• Strengthen relationships with the US State Department, USAID, US and International NGOs, civic organizations, faith-based organizations and academic institutions;
Work with colleagues at WA and beyond to ensure a successful World Water Day each year and leverage other annual events/days;
Perform other tasks as required.
Desired Sills
The ideal WASH Sustainability Director will have:
Commitment to the values, mission an d vision of WASH Advocates;
Minimum of 10 years of experience; 5 of those years on-the-ground working with water and sanitation solutions in developing countries;
Sound understanding and significant experience with WASH monitoring, evaluation and best and emerging practices in sustainability;
Excellent research skills, and the ability to deliver compelling arguments to new and existing
funders, implementers and academic institutions (strong written and oral communication);
Degree (Masters preferred) in a relevant field;
• Experience setting strategy;
• Work well across borders, cultures, and languages;
High level of attention to detail, self-motivated, team player with the ability to multi-task;
Ability to coordinate multiple projects and deadlines;
• Strong ability to develop and foster alliances;
• High-energy, love of challenge, and ability to be effective in a constantly changing environment;
Familiar with Microsoft Office program s including Word, PowerPoint and Excel;
Able to travel occasionally and to work independently and creatively.
Successful completion of a writing test will be required.
This is a full-time exempt position located in Washington, DC.
Salary range is commensurate with experience.
Minimum travel, primarily domestic, will be required.
