Communication Officer

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
UNITAID's mission is to contribute to the scale-up of access to treatment for HIV/AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis for people in developing countries by leveraging price reductions for quality drugs and diagnostics and accelerating the pace at which they are made available.

Description of duties:
Under the supervision of the Senior Communications Adviser, and in liaison with the Communication Team and relevant UNITAID staff, the Communications Officer/Writer will contribute to the creation of a solid body of information, to the promotion of UNITAID work and issues to the media and other audiences and perform other duties as necessary for the duration of his/her contract.

Summary of assigned duties:
- Responsible for writing and overall production of UNITAID Annual Report.
- Research and write media and advocacy materials for UNITAID.
- Implement media and advocacy strategies, including the identification of key messages, and creation/preparation of documents for publication in journals, position papers, speeches and talking points.
- Coordinate the development, production and dissemination of UNITAID publications and materials, including the updating of existing materials.
- Seek and identify media opportunities for UNITAID issues.
- Continuously update background materials, including fact sheets, on topics covered by UNITAID.
- Regular monitoring of international media, global health and innovative financing issues.
- Responsible for dealing with daily media queries and arranging press briefings and interviews as required.
- Contribute input into and advise on the UNITAID web site.
- Write feature stories for web site.
- Responsible for the arrangement of translated materials.
- Attend WHO-wide communications meetings.
- Other duties as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Essential:
University degree in journalism, communications or humanities, or equivalent field.

Desirable:
Background in health and/or development with knowledge of medicines and access issues.
Skills:
Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Familiarity with modern editorial and publication processes.
Demonstrated knowledge of global health and development.
Proven ability to communicate effectively on complex issues.
Good understanding of communication principles. Strong interpersonal skills and team spirit.
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.

Experience:
Essential:
At least seven years relevant experience in writing, media outreach, editing and communications with significant experience in media requirements.
Experience in writing on issues related to public health and development with knowledge of medicines and access issues.
Experience in writing for generalist audiences.

Desirable:
Experience of publication processes.

Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and French required.
