Congo Basin Coast (CBC) Program Manager – Consultancy Position

Location: Libreville, Gabon

Start date: May 2011


Reports directly to: Reports on a day-to-day basis to the Gabon Country Program Director (CPD) with additional reporting to the Director, Marine Conservation (MD) of WCS in New York and the Country Program Director in Congo.

Position Description: For 25 years, WCS has been leading conservation in Central Africa and has recently expanded this mission to the waters of the Congo Basin Coast—seawards of Congo and Gabon. WCS’ conservation efforts include targeted species interventions on cetaceans, sea turtles, and West African manatees, support for a network of marine and coastal protected areas and mitigation of challenges such as fisheries throughout the CBC. The CBC Program Manager coordinates across WCS efforts both in region and globally to develop, coordinate and implement the growing conservation commitment in the region. Principle responsibilities include raising funds, coordinating and leveraging the combined coastal activities of WCS in region, assist in development of workplans, implantation and monitoring of field activities and build cohesion and collaboration among the Congo Basin Coast WCS team and partners.

Skills/experience required:

• Demonstrated success raising funds
• Demonstrated experience with large project management
• Proven ability to achieve successful on-the-ground marine and coastal conservation and development in the international context
• Fluent in both French and English
• Experience in Central Africa or a comparable area of Africa
• PhD or Masters with equivalent experience and strong record in coastal/marine conservation science, policy and conservation
