Development & Marketing Officer - World Maritime University


The World Maritime University was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMU wishes to enhance its role as a global centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research in the maritime field. WMU offers three Master of Science programs, one in Sweden and two in China, and a Ph.D. program in Maritime Affairs that offers doctoral students opportunities for research across the maritime field, from shipping & port management to maritime safety & security.
 
Purpose of the Position 
One of the eight key strategies that have been adopted and endorsed by the WMU Board of Governors and the IMO Council as part of the financial sustainability of the World Maritime University (WMU) calls for the establishment of an Endowment Fund. A key consideration in providing a long-term income stream to the University through an Endowment Fund will be a dedicated fund raising campaign based on a specific resource-mobilization strategy. WMU is therefore seeking a Development and Marketing Officer with the appropriate expertise and experience to deliver results within specific timelines. The Development and Marketing Officer will provide development, including fundraising and marketing support to the University and to support the Endowment Fund in particular.
 
Overall Responsibility
The Development and Marketing Officer serves as the primary focal point for all development activities under the WMU Strategic Vision Plan and the Business Plan containing the WMU strategic vision, mission, goals, objectives and expected results. The incumbent will prepare and ensure timely and strategic delivery of accurate, and complete information and visibility to WMU, its products and programmes to ensure wide dissemination and international exposure. The incumbent will be responsible for the design of a fund raising strategy and support a development and marketing strategy. The incumbent will work with the President and the University’s senior management and communications officer to promote the visibility of WMU and its products and services; support the President in the conduct of the University’s overall fundraising activities relating to WMU endowment fundraising, donor gifts for Professorial Chairs, fellowships; and other tasks that may be assigned. The incumbent will coordinate and interact frequently with other WMU stakeholders as required in support of the University’s development and marketing efforts.
 
Specific core duties and responsibilities for the Development and Marketing Officer include the functions indicated below:
  • Support the Endowment Fund, targeting contributors in the maritime industry including shipping companies, ports, and logistics as well as exploring a wider range of potential donors with interest in sustainable oceans;
  • Coordinate a campaign to generate interest in the Endowment Fund which should include the promotion of fellowships as an element of the campaign as well as to develop a collaborative agenda with the private sector if it is to succeed in attracting the volume of donations that are needed;
  • Draft a development strategy based upon the funding requirements of the University as articulated in its Development Plan and is responsible for updating and supporting the Development Plan and its goals and objectives in accordance with the President’s direction;
  • Develop an annual work plan to investigate, canvas and campaign targeting potential donor organizations and philanthropists for major gifts to the WMU Endowment Fund;
  • Create and maintain a marketing strategy and a three year Marketing Plan 2016-18, linked to WMU’s product growth and marketing requirements, including developing marketing tools for the planning and implementation of on-going marketing work;
  • Liaise with the IMO and other internal and external stakeholders in a timely fashion on development and marketing initiatives; 
  • Provide support to the Development and Marketing Committee (DMC) under the Endowment Fund to focus and engage faculty and other professional staff on the development, marketing and fundraising activities at WMU;
  • Conduct the marketing and promotion of WMU Degree Programs and other products such as the Executive and Professional Development courses and Distance Learning PGDips in order to attract applicants and drive to secure funding;
  • Liaise with and support the President in preparing fundraising missions and specialized activities with external donor foundations, companies and governments;
  • Assist the President’s Office in development and marketing efforts, including the organization of meetings and correspondence, and maintaining the contacts lists and related records regarding WMU development efforts;
  • Collaborate with the Communications Officer to utilize various media (social media, web, publications, etc.) to promote global awareness of WMU, its products and development fundraising objectives, including the WMU Endowment Fund;
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the President.
Qualifications, competencies and professional experience
The successful candidate will have:
Education
  • First University degree in marketing and/or development or another relevant field is required.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field is desirable. 
Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience with proven accomplishments in marketing and development, and fund raising;
  • Experience working in an international multi-cultural environment is highly desirable.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent research and public-speaking skills, effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • An engaging personality and professionalism in dealing with the media and institutional stakeholders;
  • Team-oriented personality in order to work successfully with other professionals across the university;
  • Good self-direction and self-motivation, and ability to work with little guidance or supervision;
  • Goal-oriented with attention to detail and with organizational skills;
  • Ability to operate effectively and tactfully with enthusiasm in an international, educational, multi-cultural working environment;
  • Ability to work under pressure, deal with the unexpected, and travel when required. 
  • Organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.
Language Skills:
  • English: Fluent
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written Swedish is highly desirable.
Computer Skills:
  • Expert skills in the use of Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, and Internet search engines;
  • Skilled with software applications for desktop publishing and producing publications would also be an asset.
