Country Director Iraq

The British Council was founded to create ‘a friendly knowledge and understanding’ between the people of the UK and wider world by making a positive contribution to the countries we work with, and in doing so making a lasting difference to the UK’s international standing, prosperity and security. The programmes we use to do this are wide-ranging and cover the arts, education, English, science and society.
We have an excellent opportunity for a Country Director to lead the development and delivery of the 3-year Country Plan for Iraq, ensuring it meets the required cultural relations, business and operational objectives and is appropriately aligned to wider corporate strategies.   British Council Iraq is a Tier 1 operation of importance to the UK from both Security and Prosperity perspectives located in 3 offices.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following essential knowledge & experience
  • Management experience at senior level leading a medium-large, diverse and complex operation internationally
  • Strong record in business development and financial literacy
  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills at senior level
  • Ability to operate in a high risk security and financial environment
  • Experience of motivating teams to deliver in difficult environments and achieve results
Some of the main opportunities/challenges include:
  • Successful delivery of large-scale donor-funded programmes and established British Council programmes (Skills for Employability, English for the Future, New Connections, Connecting Classrooms, Internationalising Higher Education, Active Citizens)
  • Business development of new programmes, working with the global business development team
  • Development and growth of digital impact and delivery
  • Build on the progress made in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Building the skills, capabilities and professionalism of the Iraq team
  • Security/risk management
  • Managing senior stakeholder relations in the UK, Iraq, Jordan and Brussels.
  • Co-location in the offices of the British Embassy (EU and others)
