Senior Center Program Coordinator

VISIONS’ Senior Center Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the implementation of VISIONS Innovative Senior Center, currently funded by the NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA) and other sources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Including the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Ø Assist the Director in meeting and documenting all DFTA Innovative Senior Center contract requirements.

Ø Ensure the Senior Center is open 250 days per year.

Ø Assist the Director in serving a daily average of 250 seniors across all services.

Ø Assist with the service of 150 meals (daily average). Obtain a Food Protection Certificate from the NYC Department of Health. Assist the Director during the periodic survey of meals to determine the popularity of current meals and to recommend the addition of new meals.

Ø Assist in the implementation of innovative senior center programming, focusing on health promotion, physical activity, nutrition counseling and socialization.

Ø Assist the Director with the development of the meal calendar and posting assessable versions of the meal calendar.

Ø Assist with the daily collection of meal donations from senior participants.

Ø Assist with the development of a Senior Center Advisory Committee, elections and facilitation of at least 6 annual meetings.

Ø Assist with senior benefits, including case assistance and information & referral. Assist the Director in ensuring 100 contacts per week of case assistance and 500 contacts per week of information and referral.

Ø Assist with the development and facilitation of health promotion and socialization services including the following: physical health/exercise, health management, mental health programs, arts & culture, technology and education programs.

Ø Assist in the implementation and scheduling of a minimum of eight intergenerational sessions (classes, workshops) per week.

Ø In conjunction with the Director, recruit, screen (secure three references) hire and train youth volunteers (15 and older) for the intergenerational program. Write a written evaluation for each youth at the end of each semester.

Ø Assist with the recording and monitoring of intergenerational services provided.

Ø Evaluate the intergenerational program via client surveys once per year with the help of the Director.

Ø In conjunction with the VISIONS at Selis Manor Volunteer Coordinator, assist with the recruitment of volunteers, including DFTA Title V workers and WEP participants.

Ø Prepare written instructions during administrative assistant’s vacations/time off, so that the immediate supervisor or another designated staff member can implement procedures in the Director’s absence.

Community Outreach and Public Relations:

Ø Participate in outreach/network opportunities to publicize the Innovative Senior Center and to recruit youth volunteers and senior participants. Collaborate with the Director and the VISIONS Outreach Department to ensure that all presentations include outreach for the ISC.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Ø Assist in the supervision of youth volunteers recruited to help with Senior Center operations.

Ø Assist in the supervision of interns and/or part-time assistants (i.e. BSW’s or college students, Title V workers, WEP participants) if and when funding allows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors in Social Work, Gerontology or related degree required.

Three years of work experience. Understanding of and experience working with youth, seniors with disabilities and/or intergenerational programs and/or senior center experience. Project management experience preferred. Excellent computer skills and database skills required. Prior experience working in a DFTA funded senior center a plus.

SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:

Attention to detail, ability to work independently, ability to interact with staff and vendors, must be a self-starter, well organized, a team player and understanding of the philosophy of a nonprofit service organization and the impact that it has on the culture and operation of the agency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
