Media Manager
Job Description – Media Manager IOGP, Brussels based
The Role
The Media Manager IOGP will be responsible for the communications activities of the IOGP Brussels office and will serve as the IOGP Media Manager globally.
The Media Manager will support IOGP members active in the EU and the local secretariat in their engagement with the European Union and other EU-focused stakeholders and will be responsible for:
- Creating and implementing a communications plan based on the Association’s advocacy priorities in Brussels
- Working with IOGP Brussels policy managers to identify key points in the legislative timeline when IOGP public response would support advocacy work effectively
- Drafting media content ahead of major EU events (adoption of Directives by the Commission, Parliament votes etc.) or IOGP events
- Editing documents, writing news releases, opinion pieces, speeches etc.
- Maintaining and further developing relationships with key EU media
- Responding directly to media enquiries and, on occasion, participating directly in interviews
- Monitoring media (incl. social media) to keep an eye on trends/emerging issues/emerging stakeholders and devising and operating potential response channels.
The Media Manager will work closely with the London-based IOGP Communications staff to develop IOGP’s global media strategy and scale up the Association’s international visibility. He/she will be responsible for:
- Serving as a spokesperson for IOGP globally
- Maintaining a global media plan and talking points to make the case for oil and gas
- Developing an international media network
- Preparing and setting up interviews, background briefings for IOGP’s leadership
- Contributing to creating IOGP content – blogs, tweets, website content – and extract value from IOGP’s technical work to effectively communicate about it.
Qualifications & Experience
- Several years of experience in an equivalent role, which has involved drafting strategies and responsibility for communications with EU institutions, stakeholders and relevant media with demonstrable success
- Excellent English writing and editing skills, with a proven ability to grasp – and when needed, to simplify – complex technical, economic and legal issues
- Fluency in at least one other core EU language
- A good understanding of the EU energy and climate policies – and of the oil and gas industry – is required
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills for building contacts externally and within IOGP committees, member companies, stakeholders and allied organisations as well as the IOGP secretariat itself
- An outstanding team player with a diplomatic approach and appropriate cultural sensitivities
- Willingness to travel on a regular basis to London and occasionally beyond
- Graduate or equivalent
- Excellent PC and social networking skills (Word, PowerPoint, Internet, Twitter)
Organisation/reporting lines
The Communications Manager will have a double reporting line: to the EU Affairs Director (the head of the Brussels secretariat) and to the London-based Global Engagement Manager (who coordinates IOGP’s communications staff.)
