Associate, International Communications

The American Red Cross seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated self-starter to join our International Communications team as a Communications Associate in our National Headquarters in Washington, DC. This individual will help to develop and implement creative strategies to promote the global work of the Red Cross to U.S. audiences. The successful candidate must be a team player, extremely articulate, as well as someone who enjoys working in a high pressure, fast-paced, collaborative environment. This candidate will be responsible for drafting various communications products, supporting media relations efforts and should be able to quickly move into problem-solving mode whenever challenges arise. The Communications Associate will report to the Director of the International Communications and be part of a team that works closely with American Red Cross international programs and national and chapter communications staff, as well as colleagues from the global Red Cross network and peer organizations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: • Write and edit original stories, and other media materials for the American Red Cross website, intranet, stewardship reports and external publications, including updating key communication tools such as: press kits, press releases, talking points, fact sheets, FAQs, speeches, PowerPoint presentations, and background briefing materials; • Support the media relations efforts of the American Red Cross to help secure positive press coverage for the international programs and services; as well as coordinate media interaction with American Red Cross experts; • Support the American Red Cross external communications and media engagement for international disasters, including preparing press releases, vetting media interviews, and prepping subject matter experts for interviews • Inform and execute the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) program’s external communications activities as well as provide media training for its leadership; • Support the communications needs of American Red Cross programs in Latin America and the Caribbean remotely, including leading the communications activities during a disaster response in this region. • Serve as the team’s lead for digital media, including identifying strategic opportunities and partnerships, producing a biweekly podcast and exploring ways to integrate and present social data; • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, toolkits and templates to enable the American Red Cross to effectively and proactively engage key constituencies; • Support a select grouping of American Red Cross chapters in developing and implementing their international communications strategies.

Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or public relations with a minimum of 3 years of related experience desirable; • Excellent writing skills; • Knowledge of Mac editing systems (including Final Cut, Garage Band and Fission) is preferred; • Understanding of social and digital media, current trends and emerging opportunities; • Experience in and/or a proven interest in working on international issues, including disaster management and global health programs; • Experience within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and American Red Cross chapters preferred, but not essential; • Must display flexibility, adaptability, initiative, and a high degree of competence in planning, team building, teamwork, and commitment to the American Red Cross principles; • Demonstrated ability to successfully multitask and meet deadlines in a high pressure environment; • Some international travel maybe required; • Foreign language proficiency is desirable.
