Job Description
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:  
Assist PCI’s US and Border Programs Ventanilla de Salud (VDS) project to enter and analyze data collected from program participants. The VDS program aims to prevent and reduce the impact of diseases among immigrant communities in San Diego, through education and referral services.
DUTIES & KEY TASKS:
  • Part A: Provide educational key messages, intake and referral services to VDS participants
  • Part B: Enter intake data into data base
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicant must be a current undergraduate or graduate level student in: Health Sciences, Public Health, Social Work, Statistics, International Relations students (others will be considered as well)
  • Must receive academic credit for internship or able to provide an official letter from the school stating that the internship contributes to intern’s education
  • Completion of online HIPPA training and agreement to maintain confidentiality (can be done at PCI)
  • Requires attention to detail and a high level of computer competence
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, and some statistical analysis
  • Fluency in Spanish is required
SPECIAL SKILLS PREFERRED:
  • Data entry experience
SCHEDULE:
  • Minimum commitment: 4-20 hours a week for 10 weeks.
  • Flexible hours: VDS hours are currently 8am-12pm, Monday through Thursday.
  • This internship is unpaid and located at the VDS Mexican Consulate.

INFORMATION ON VENTANILLA DE SALUD (VDS) “WINDOW OF HEALTH”:
Since 2004, PCI has partnered with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego and the U.S. Mexico Border Health Commission (USMBHC) to provide referrals and health education to over 400 visitors per day to the Consulate, and 35,000 unduplicated, underserved, underinsured San Diego residents, in order to improve their access to preventive health care, including issues related to substance abuse and mental health focusing its efforts on establishment of a medical home and health insurance enrollment. Many clients are women struggling with obtaining access to the most basic of healthcare services for themselves and their families and the project provides this vulnerable population with a vital link to information, support, counseling, referral and other services. VDS has enhanced the provision of perinatal outreach and referral.
