About the job:
CSIR Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) unit has a vacancy for a Database Developer and Researcher.MDS focuses on advanced mathematical modelling (AMM), information security (IS) and hosting mobile intelligent autonomous systems (MIAS). The unit assists in the CSIR’s drive to strengthen science, engineering and technology (SET) outputs; develops human capital and invests in emerging research areas (ERA), including nanotechnology, synthetic biology and mobile intelligent autonomous systems.
Key responsibilities:
  • Design and develop relational database application.
  • Design, develop and maintain web-based business processes and database applications.
  • Implement database security protocols into database applications.
  • Evaluate database integrity and security.
  • Write and maintain functional specifications for database applications.
  • Resolve distributed database capacity issues.
  • Develop database administration procedures and audits.
  • Develop data migration and conversion techniques.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior researchers in the group.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, electrical or electronic engineering.
  • Certification in one or more leading database systems.
  • Proficiency in open source tools.
  • Two or more years’ of working experience in the database field, involving research and/or development role.
  • Sound knowledge of database and information architecture, with web application integration.
  • A sound understanding of database tools.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to apply business and scientific logic to development requirements.
  • Expertise in SQL, MySQL, PHP, .NET and Java.
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English.
  • Ability to work independently and within a research team environment.
  • Ability to read outside the immediate field in order to factor in diverse client/product requirements.
  • Proven technical leadership abilities.
South African citizenship is necessary as a security clearance is required for this position.
