Mechanical Designer: Sensor Science and Technology

The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation, implementing projects throughout Africa and making a difference in people’s lives.
Mechanical Designer: Sensor Science and Technology

About the job:
The CSIR contributes novel and groundbreaking materials, composites, devices, techniques and processes for industries such as automotive, aerospace, health, energy and the built environment. Its world-class materials science and manufacturing (MSM) professionals also play a significant role in the scientific and technological foundations for alternative energy security in South Africa while assisting the South African manufacturing industry to be globally competitive in micro-manufacturing.
The Sensor Science and Technology competence area of the CSIR MSM operating unit focuses on research and development (R&D) in fields such as sonar, acoustics, solid-state actuation, and electro-optical technologies and applications. Activities span the full cycle of innovation from strategic basic research through to industrialisation and technology transfer to industry. Projects are performed for both internal and external clients and collaborative research is conducted with higher education institutes.
Within this competence area, there is a need for a Mechanical Designer to work with the R&D teams across all areas of activity.
Key responsibilities:
A Mechanical Designer is needed to work in a multi-disciplinary environment supporting research development and industrialisation work on mechanical devices, particularly in the fields of sonar and solid state actuators. The incumbent’s responsibilities will include:
  • Conceptualisation and mechanical design of components, open cast moulds and sub-system assemblies.
  • Computer-aided design (e.g. extensive use of Solid Works or a similar package).
  • Compilation and configuration management of technical documentation (e.g. manufacturing drawings, assembly instructions, process record sheets, etc.).
  • Application of precision-engineering methods.
  • Mechanical assembly and integration.
  • Project-costing.
  • Parts procurement and sub-contractor management.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • The minimum requirement is a national diploma in mechanical engineering with at least five years’ experience in a suitable environment.
  • Ability to work under their own initiative; be able to run small project deliveries on brief, budget and time; and occasionally coordinate small technical teams for delivery.
Previously disadvantaged individuals are encouraged to apply.
