Senior Biometrician / Genetic Resources Characterization (Re-publication)


We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and service-orientated professional for the position of Senior Biometrician / Genetic Resources Characterization.  The position will be based at CIMMYT’s Main Campus (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico) but will interact with all CIMMYT´s experimental stations and regional offices (country and world-wide) on a regular basis.
The successful candidate will help strengthen CIMMYT’s team of biometricians and will also interact with partner institution scientists to develop and apply the best statistical tools for experimental design, phenotypic trial analysis (including multi-environment trials), diversity analyses, and association mapping.
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, is a not-for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries.  
The primary objective of this position is to coordinate and provide biometrics support and research for the Seeds of Discovery (SeeD) project. SeeD aims at characterizing maize and wheat genetic resources to facilitate their broader use in breeding programs. SeeD is one of four components of the Mexico-funded MasAgro initiative, which integrates the characterization of genetic resources, molecular-breeding programs, and agronomic interventions into an impact-oriented R4D program.

Other specific duties of this position include:
  • Advise scientists on experimental designs and analyses.
  • Perform statistical designs and analyses for SeeD field trials.
  • Collate and analyze trial data from large historical multi-location, multi-year experiments for association-mapping analyses in collaboration with statistical geneticists.
  • Liaise with statistical geneticists and bioinformaticians to perform diversity analyses and genome-wide prediction of traits.
  • Liaise with CIMMYT’s Science Informatics Unit to ensure that statistical software tools are integrated with databases, and maintained and improved regularly.
  • Publish significant results in high-caliber scientific journals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
  • PhD in statistics, biometrics, agricultural statistics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of agricultural research and plant breeding.
  • Excellent statistical computing skills, including proficiency in R, SAS, ASREML, and/or GENSTAT.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to contribute proactively to a results-oriented, multi-disciplinary team.
