Research and Development Engineers (X2)
About the job:
CSIR Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) unit assists the CSIR’s drive to strengthen science, engineering and technology (SET) outputs; develop human capital; and invest in emerging research areas (ERAs). The unit has a strong focus on the creation and dissemination of new scientific knowledge. It also collaborates with national and international partners in research and development (R&D) activities.
MDS has a vacancy for three Research and Development Engineers in its Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems (MIAS) emerging research area (ERA). MIAS focuses its research on the application of intelligent field robotics in unstructured environments, where the robots are required to operate alongside people. Past and present projects include an autonomous vehicle, safety inspection robots and compliant manipulation. The successful candidates will be expected to carry out R&D in these areas of robotics. This position is based in Pretoria.
Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in project requirements definition and system specifications.
  • Implement algorithm and model physical systems in Matlab and Simulink.
  • Develop software in C/C++ under Linux.
  • Implement solutions on group platforms.
  • Write publications arising from research work done in the group on research output.
  • Present R&D results to team members and clients.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
