Senior Researcher: Transport Engineering
About the job:
CSIR Built Environment (BE) unit has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher in the Transport Systems and Operations competence area. The main purpose of this position is to conduct intensive applied research in passenger transport aimed at providing solutions for improved public transport service design and operations; rural transport for development; improved transport infrastructure investment strategies; improved transport policy formulation and impact monitoring; and integrated transport network management.This position is based in Pretoria, but the incumbent may be expected to travel from time to time.
Key responsibilities:
  • Analyse and interpret data gathered from transport studies.
  • Compile integrated transport plans.
  • Provide strategic support to the research group leader and the team.
  • Assist with preparation of tenders.
  • Provide support of technical civil engineering to the team.
  • Train and mentor junior staff.
  • Actively service strategic research alliances.
  • Liaise with clients on all levels.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Master’s degree in civil or transport engineering and/or mathematical statistics or equivalent.
  • The successful applicant will be encouraged to register for a Doctoral degree as appropriate.
  • A minimum of five years’ working experience in the transport research with any of the following as the main activities:
o   Travel behaviour research;
o   Transport modelling;
o   Public transport service design;
o   Rural transport for modelling; and
o   Statistical modelling.
  • Must have strong/high level analytical skills.
  • Good research and report-writing skills.
  • Must have the ability to work accurately, efficiently and independently as well as in a team.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Must have good communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • Must be computer literate (ability to understand and use specialised software).
  • Ability to continuously disseminate research outputs in the form of technical papers.
