BroadBand Infraco CHIEF ENGINEER


Broadband Infraco is a State-led intervention to rapidly normalise telecoms market efficiency by commoditising only those parts of infrastructure that impede private sector development and innovation in telecoms service and content offerings. With this ground-breaking development comes the need to find enthusiastic South Africans with appropriate skills, qualifications and experience to form part of this initiative.

CHIEF ENGINEER
Key outputs: Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer, the incumbent will research the current network status in
terms of age, capacity maintenance issues and its position in the lifecycle, as well as conduct research on various technology solutions available in the market. He/she will be expected to interface with the marketing team with regard to demand forecast for the medium- to long-term plan and make recommendations regarding the technology strategy for approval by the CTO. The role also undertakes an annual cycle of network scanning to check for services used and operational issues, assesses the options for the optimisation of the network based on findings and uses the findings to drive capital programmes going forward in terms of demand forecasting and network assessment.

Qualifications and experience: Applicants with a BSc or BEng degree and a minimum of 10 years’ experience
in telecommunications (5 years in a senior capacity) who are registered with the Engineering Council of SA are
invited to apply. Management of people, costs and technology is critical. Good presentation and interpersonal
skills are also needed. A comprehensive knowledge of layer 1 and 2 mediums and technologies, including
Optical Cable, Wave Division Multiplexing, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), Synchronisation Systems,
Data Communication Networks (DCN), Network Management Systems (NMS), Ancillary Systems (Power, HVAC,
Facilities), Operations and Support Systems (OSS) and microwave is essential.
