The University of Botswana is a broad-based public institution situated in Gaborone, the nation’s capital city. In 2009/10, it had approximately 11,600 full-time students and 3,000 part-time and distance learners. There were 1,320 graduate students. The total staff establishment includes 800 academic staff and 1856 support staff members. It offers 65 undergraduate programmes, 98 Masters programmes and 45 PhDs. It is organized into seven faculties and a School of Graduate Studies, and has a new School of Medicine. A major building programme is being undertaken on the Gaborone campus, including the construction of a teaching hospital. In June 2008 a new strategic plan was adopted, entitled A Strategy for Excellence (www.ub.bw/ip). The plan provides direction to 2016 and beyond. The strategic goals include a significant growth in enrolments, a renewed emphasis on the quality and relevance of academic programmes, the intensification of research performance, strengthened engagement including strong internationalization, improvement to the student experience and excellence in human resources for delivery. The University is in a dynamic and forward-looking phase of its development. The Library has an important role to play in the delivery of these strategic goals. The University of Botswana Library system consists of the main library on the Gaborone campus and three branch libraries (www.ub.bw/library). The system currently has 458,935 books, 1027 print journals, 96714 full-text journals, 14511 e-books, 32914 pamphlets, 18003 multimedia, 30645 references, and 79 electronic databases. There is an establishment of 145 staff. It is allocated 5.7% of the University’s recurrent budget. Important new developments include the establishment of a Learning Commons, the operationalization of the digital institutional repository (the University of Botswana Research, Innovation and Scholarship Archive (UBRISA) and the implementation of the University Digital Scholarship Strategy. It is expected that the successful applicant will ensure that the Library is at the forefront of development in digital technologies and electronic resources.

Duties: The main purpose of the job is to provide strategic leadership for the development of library and information services to support the University’s strategic plan and to manage high quality service delivery with a special emphasis on digital technologies and online information resources in response to changing information needs of students, faculty and research staff. The primary duties are: (i) Strategic management and innovation; (ii) Resource allocation and utilization; (iii) Human resource management; (iv) Financial management. Requirements: Candidates should have: (i) a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent professional qualification; (ii) a minimum of ten years experience as a professionally qualified graduate, three of which should have been at Deputy Director level in a university library (or equivalent); (iii) thorough understanding of university systems as an operational environment and of the role of an academic library in supporting research and teaching programmes and in providing an interactive learning space; (iv) proven track record in the application of ICTs to academic information services delivery and operating familiarity with emerging trends in knowledge management and digital scholarship.
