Director of Environmental Health and Safety - Office of Environmental Health and Safety

Reports to: Executive Director for Public Safety

Purpose

The director provides strategic leadership and is responsible for the development, implementation and administration of comprehensive environmental health and safety programs and policies for the University various campuses and attached premises. The director is responsible for the assessment and management of environmental and occupational health and safety risk elements, advising University administrators of the acceptability of such risk, ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental and occupational health regulations, serving as University liaison with several regulatory agencies and assisting in preparation of interactions with local and international customers regarding environmental health and safety issues.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Facilitate the forward movement of the University mission with the mission of EHS to promote and support the academic and research missions of the university
  • Provides vision for where the department needs to go with the judgment to move it forward at a manageable and realistic pace
  • Collaborate with the student affairs office on EH&S related issues such as during events or during emergencies
  • Understands customer service and follow through with concerns from various University Departments
  • Promote the importance of environmental health and safety and create a University culture that integrates health and safety in all areas
  • Manage and oversee hazardous waste management and disposal
  • Manage and oversee chemical, biological, and radiological agents on campus and their regulations
  • Work with University-wide committees to monitor and assist as requested to accomplish their mission
  • Manage risks while ensuring that policies, regulations, and safety procedures are in place
  • Manage and oversee training program for faculty, staff and students
  • Communicates hazards, risks and rising occupational health and safety issues to senior administrators and to the AUC community as required
  • Manages and oversees health and safety issues in capital construction projects

Requirements
Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • NEBOSH certified
  • OHSAS 18001 Lead Auditor Certified is preferred
  • OSHA certified is preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience
  • Preferred experience in an international university setting
