INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION: Portland, OR – Global Headquarters

DATES OF INTERNSHIP: Negotiable

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 3 – 6 months

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Global Citizen Corps is an international movement of youth who connect globally and act locally. Over one year, leaders work with Mercy Corps to get the training, knowledge, resources and tools to raise awareness and organize effective local actions that make a global impact. Leaders mobilize their schools and communities around a series of Global Action Days, which connect to international campaigns. Leaders connect with each other through an interactive online forum to discuss issues on-line with others around the globe and in live video conferences. Leaders will gain skills to organize powerful actions that address the problems such as public health, food security, conflict, climate change and lack of access to education.

Working as a marketing intern for Global Citizen Corps, this internship offers a broad scope of content area in the field of international relations and humanitarian work including climate change, food security, governance, economic development, conflict and more. The youth education programs offer exposure to the tenets of activities-based, experiential learning along with an insider’s view of curriculum design for youth leadership programs. Working to market GCC programs with professional staff not only teaches the fundamentals of marketing and public relations, but also provides a workplace overview of nonprofit operations.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Increase visibility and outreach of the Global Citizen Corps program
  • Develop and support internal marketing strategy leveraging existing platforms and resources
  • Increase program reach locally and nationally

DELIVERABLES:

  • Update and maintain database of contacts and outreach strategy for events i.e. trainings, video conferences, etc.
  • Develop marketing strategy for local and internal outreach with Program Officer and Program Manager
  • Update and Implement plan for social media
  • Research and document online tools for GCC staff to continue building marketing capacity
  • Manual of marketing strategies youth can utilize to market their action projects

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent writing, editing and basic graphic design skills
  • In depth strategic understanding of outreach using Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites
  • Experience in marketing youth events and workshops
  • Experience with PPT, Word, Google docs, Excel
  • Strong organization skills
  • Initiative and ability to identify needs, especially in a busy environment
  • Ability to follow and execute plans
  • Ability to effectively manage time and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team environment

LIVING CONDITIONS: Intern is responsible for their own accommodation in Portland, OR.

Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
