The Law Society represents solicitors in England and Wales. From negotiating with and lobbying the profession's regulators, government and other decision makers, to offering training and advice, we're here to help, protect and promote solicitors.

The EU Policy Adviser role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic team responsible for analysing and monitoring EU proposals by seeking improvements to law, practice and procedure and lobbying for change. As EU Policy Adviser for justice issues, you will be required to analyse and provide expert policy advice on the impact of relevant EU developments on domestic policies through regular contact with specialist Committees and policy advisers in the UK. You will have the opportunity to represent at a high level the interests of the Law Societies on external committees and in developing relations to with other stakeholders.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Degree level or equivalent level of education;
  • Substantial knowledge of EU law, policy making and procedures;
  • Significant work experience in the field of policy, e.g. an EU institution, private practice, or public policy work;
  • An ability to analyse and understand the policy implications of EU initiatives and legislative proposals;
  • An ability to research and prepare policy papers and to explain complex issues clearly and concisely;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including tact and diplomacy, in dealing with a wide range of individuals and building good networks of contacts;
  • An ability to work independently and under pressure to tight deadlines. Good personal organisational skills;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Fluent English as well as French or German.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of other EU languages;
  • Knowledge of the legal profession and the UK Law Societies.
